It would normally be the first option, but upon re-reading it, I dont think 'selflessly' applies.
They are getting paid right? And they are most probably enjoying their work.
As far as piracy is concerned:
Little programs I use often I pay for (WinRAR, Winamp (when it wasnt free), etc). Big £000s software I havent, to date, paid for. Even if I think it is amazingly useful etc, theres no way I'm paying that much to a company like MS, Adobe or similar. They are getting loads from their corporate agreements, and will have plenty of hot dinners till the day they die. I really don't feel much sympathy for them to be honest.
