Dual booting

Had a 80gb Seagate IDE hard drive running win2kpro. Installed a new Maxtor 250gb SATA hard drive. During installation MaxBlast 4 software asked it I want to copy info from original drive to new drive. Chose yes. Then asked if I wanted to make Maxtor drive bootable. Chose yes so I could boot to this drive if first one failed. Is this the proper way to create a dualboot system. In order to boot to the Maxtor drive I have to disconnect the IDE drive. Should a dualboot system allow me to boot to SATA drive without disconnecting IDE drive?
Want to do a fresh install of OS on Maxtor SATA drive. Both drives connected. OS only detecting IDE drive and attempting to install on this drive at setup. BIOS boot sequence is CDROM drive, IDE, floppy.
Don't know much about hard drives, just how to connect them in the box and take them out. Read about partitioning but not familar with doing it.

First, a dual boot usually refers to two different operating systems installed on the same hard drive. But it can be two different operating systems on different hard drives in the same computer. It can also be the same operating system installed twice on the same computer.
It sounds like you must install drivers during setup that will allow the operating system to see the SATA hard drive. These drivers should have come with your computer/motherboard. If not, you will have to find out the manufacturer of the motherboard and get the drivers from their web site.
Once you have the drivers, I would disconnect the IDE hard drive. This will make things simpler. Start the install by booting from your Win2k CD. As soon as the CD starts to load, you should see "press F6 if you have drivers to install' (or something very similar). At one point you will be given the oportunity to install the drivers. A screen will come up saying "press 'S' to install drivers". ( I don't remember exactly how all this is worded, but you'll understand when you see it on screen) Follow the instructions on the screen. Agree to the EULA, and then you should see a screen asking where to load the OS. If something is already on the hard drive you will need to prees "D" to delete it. When done you will need to press "C" to create a partition. You will see a place to enter how big you want the partition. After you put in the partition size and press enter, you will have to tell setup to install on the new partition. Then you will see a screen asking how yo format the partition. I'd choose NTFS. From there everthing should be self explanitory.
I wrote from memory so I hope I didn't forget anything.
When the install is done, you can reconnect your IDE hard drive. Then you can start this process all over again, but choose to install on the IDE drive. You must load the SATA drivers so setup knows that drive is there.
Setup will create a dual boot menu that you will see when you start the computer.

Disconnected IDE drive. Boot from OS CD. Press F6 and inserted floppy with SATA drivers. Entered SATA controller drivers;

Pressed Enter to set up windows 2000. Message says setup does not see any storage device installled. Press F3 to exit setup.

BIOS boot sequence - CDROM, HDD0,HDD1. SCSI (SATA drive) is not included. I have 2 hd drives 1 IDE and 1 SATA.

Just a dumb Q: Does your BIOS setup see the SATA drive?

If boot with both hard drives connected, windows 2000 setup runs after loading SATA controller drivers from floppy. Get EULA and setup is ready to install OS but to the IDE drive, not the SATA drive.

Bootup DOS screen shows IDE drive as Primary Master and the Maxtor SATA drive as SATA 0. SATA 1 drive is my Plextor DVD R/W SATA optical drive. Primary and Secondary Slaves are None.

You inadvertently selected the wrong drivers. Try this again and select only the Silicon Image driver, and all will be well.

Yes time, I inadvertently selected the wrong drivers. Win2000 setup was giving me the wrong info -> Silicon Image Sil 3112 SATA RAID controller for windows xp/Server 2003

This driver is not only for win xp but also for win2000 as the driver link above shows. My NF7-S mob uses a Silicon 3112 SATA chip and not Intel or Via. So I only needed to install the sil 3112 driver.

Installed sil 3112 driver only at setup and SATA hdd detected. Windows 2000 installed successfully.
