Firefox compatibility problems

Now I know Firefox is more standards compliant than IE; what I'm talking about is problems visiting certain web sites, and asking if there's something in the settings I can tweak in FF to make my life easier. I've gone from a 100% IE user to about 10% IE and 90% FF, a change that amazes even pore ole meself.

The link to the power supply calculator - in FF I can select values, etc., but nothing happens when I click the "calculate my power supply" button. BTW this button is near the right edge of the screen opposite the "Last updated" field in FF, but is below the "last updated" in IE.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website, Vehicle Ratings page. At the top, select make and model, and click Go; nothing happens. Works in IE.

etc., etc.

Any suggestions?

I had the same problem...I also get error messages when I visit sites like the inquirer and the register when I use FF.

I've started using it much more at work now, but I've only switch about 25% at home...not sure why.

In your link for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website, the go button worked for me... I had to select a vehicle first, but after that it took me to a page with green boxes. The power supply page does say "This utility requires Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater", so I didn't expect it to work.

Thanks for the info, Handruin.

That is bizarre! I've been using FF to read The Inquirer daily for the last month with absolutely no problems. The Insurance page doesn't work for me, but works for you. What on earth is going on??

I'll try to screen capture the message and post it...it's weird. It only happens at work though...

The power supply calculator uses some VBscript instead of Javascript some reason. That's why it doesn't work in Firefox.

The IIHS site works fine for me in Mozilla. It appears to use Javascript to do the fancy stuff.

Which leads to the obvious: Mubs, do you have javascript enabled?

Although I suspect you used the PSU calculator solely as an example of broken FF, but if your interested in the PSU calculator, an alternative one can be found here - its based upon assumptions layed out in a FiringSquad article from last year.

Thanks guys.

CityK, Thanks for the link to the other PS calc. Most of my FF settings are at default; that means Java & JavaScript are enabled (I double checked). So why doesn't IIHS work for me? I'm bugged.

mubs,

the IIHS works fine for me too, however, that said, if you poke around the FF forums at Mozillazine you'll see that others have various javascript problems with this or that site. Perhaps a reinstall is in order? (If you wish to painlessly backup your profile info use Mozilla Backup....I use an older nightly for 1.3a+ that works flawlessly for both FF and TB..... If you do perform a reinstall, try the IIHS site first before restoring your profile settings, just to rule out that possiblity being the culprit).

Thanks all.

Sorry I wasn't specific - I'm running FF ver. 0.8.

While I can't be sure, I believe many of my browsing problems started after installing Encarta Ref. Library DVD (running from HDD). I was running IE 5.5 (and WMP 6.4, the default shipped with W2k); Encarta installed IE 6 and WMP 7.1. For many days, browsing was a nightmare; I'd get frequent timeouts, DNS errors etc. (I'm on cable). I did a repair of IE 6 and things are much, much better, though not as fine as they were before I installed Encarta. Accursed Microsoft.

I'll try your suggestion to reinstall, CityK.

Oh my eternal deity....
I just looked at the source for that power supply calculator.
Yes the problem is the use of vbscript versus javascript.
But even if they fixed that... it is a form with no form!
Those crazy fly by night web developers....
you never know what they'll come up with.

More whining - ddrueding's site doesn't work for me in FF; have to use IE 6. Anybody else have the same problem in FF?

Nope, his site works fine for me. Drop-down menus work, the collapsable section work. I had no problems with FF.
