I'm pretty sure that Field Programmable Gate Arrays are slower and more expensive than the transistor-based CPUs we use now. I know there's a couple of EE types who I'm sure will correct me but, uh, slower, more expensive logic gates that're normally used in prototyping don't normally lend themselves to faster chips.

While the silicon may be slower, they're faster because they do things in parallel (array).
