G@H As A Service

Anyone setting up G@H as a service? How are you doing it? I have seen this method but the only problem I have with it is that there appears to be no Net connection to my machine (for downloading work/uploading results) until someone logs on. This is the method I have seen so far.

Is there a better way? I'll be using WinXP on the comp in question, btw.

You could run with the -nonet option and upload results when it is convenient, i.e. every couple of weeks or so.

Nah, this is for my fath-in-law's machine. I just don't want him to be bothered with teh command prompt window....how can I get rid of that besides using the ToggleMinimize software??

I think the instructions are not clear on the MS site or I did something wrong. Anyway, I used this method and it seems to work like clockwork...

BTW, the method described in the MS article is the method I use with the addition that I create a subkey on the level of Application called AppDirectory and put the path to the app in there. Then I use pstools from SysInternals to control the service.

For those of you with dual boxes, I renamed the ghclient in my second installation to ghclient2 so that when I pulled up the task manager I could tell the clients apart.

If you can't get it running as a service, download Electron Microscope from here:

Unzip the files to your genome directory

In the options page that opens when you run it, tick the following:

Start G@H on Start-Up
Hide G@H Window on Start
Run EM in Stealth

I guess you would want to click Close G@H Window on Shut-Down as well. If you have multiple clients running, you can add those as well.

Either have EM in your Startup folder or add it to your win.ini file, then when Windows boots, EM will run hidden, and start the genome@home client, which will also be hidden. EM and ghclient will still show up in the task manager, but there won't be any sign of activity on the desktop or in the system tray.
