It's a runor so far, but the story is that Nvidia knows it has to make a faster chip now that ATI is going to introduce their next revision.

This could be a bunch of bs...time will tell.

One has to wonder if diverting engineers to their nforce products might've had negative consequences for NV30, whether or not the product is cancelled or otherwise limited in production.

I doubt that they diverted engineers. Like ATi, I'm sure that they've added a large number of engineers (both hardware and software) all around. These companies no longer develop one product at a time; there are bound to be at least three different GPUs in development right now.
