How to know that DVD-Burners are Ubiquitous

Couple weeks ago I RMA'd a plain old LiteOn 52x CD-ROM to Newegg.
The replacement they sent me is an 8x DVD burner.

Doesn't that sound more like a mistake than an availability/pricepoint shift?

Who, other than a large OEM, buys CD-ROMs over DVD combo drives of some sort?

At retail, is there even a meaningful difference in price?

Some of my business customers don't want writable optical drives in every PC.
And sometimes people ask for CD-ROMs as a second drive, so they can listen to CDs and still use their burner.

Fair enough, but wouldn't they just use DVD-ROM drives?

I bought 3 brand new Samsung 48x CD-ROM drives last month for $4.95 each.

I think the last batch of LiteOns I bought were $11 apiece, shipped.

You have to push *a lot* of volume at those prices....

90% of the computers I build for work only have CD-ROMs in them.
