Hi
I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me ?
I found a HP Quantum fireball TM 3.5 series 2550 MB disc drive that i salvaged from the
case/ shell that holds the components.
Like the PowerSupply and motherboard that holds the CPU.
Someone were i live was throwing it out as trash.
The motherboard CPU has a Intel pentium PRO processor.
There are six slots for Hewlett Packard memory cards.
( 4 of 128 mb SDRam )
Two slots not used.
I think it's a Hewlet Packard motherboard because there the HP symbol imprinted on it.
Question, how old might this motherboard be ?
I think this is the serial number on
the HP Quantum fireball TM. #394706663125
I don't know what the manufacture date is on it ?
What i was really wondering is what the resale value might be on these computer components ? $$
Any help you could provide me i'd great fully appreciate.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Doug Climenson

Hi Doug, welcome aboard.

There is not a great deal of market value in there, but every little bit helps, of course.

At least over here (I'm from Oz) there is still a thriving market for smaller, older drives. I'd expect that, provided it's in good condition, you'd be able to get between AU$20 to $50 for theTM. Yes, that's a wide margin, but it all depends on whether you happen to know someone who happens to need such a drive.

The TM 2.5s were common around 1997, which was also the time when the Pentium Pro was about. Your machine migh be a 1996 or 1998 model but I doubt it: almost certainly 1997.

Value on the P-Pro? Probably pretty hard to sell it at all. But that EDO RAM is still something that people ask for, and if it's 16MB or 32MB modules they are very salable. Again in Oz dollars, maybe $20 a pair for 16MB EDOs, at least double that for 32MB ones. You would need to check, but they are probably standard 72-pin EDOs, or possibly 72-pin fast page SIMMS - which are worth the same as EDO.

A good way to get a decent return on the box woud be to sell it as a complete system to someone who needs a light-duty internet/word processing box. It would take a little time and trouble, but give you the most $$.

But the perfect use for it would be to hook it into your current system with a cheap second-hand network cable and use it to crunch proteins - for Team Storage Forum.net, of course. :)

Always the salesman Tannin.

Welcome Doug20910. I would not be as optimistic about the resale value of that machine as Tannin, so I'll just leave my depressing views at that.

Thank's guys for the reply to my
question.
I'm a newbee or what you would call
a novice about the subject of
computers.
I'm currently using a Macintosh
clone running on OS 8.6
The browser i'm using is netscape
communicator 4.7
My first computer was a Apple
Macintosh Performa 637 CD.
I may post a question about the
Macintosh Performa 637 here
later on. OK
Sincerely,
Doug Climenson

Hi Doug. Welcome aboard.

There are Mac users here, a small, hardy band, and I daresay they have a reasonable degree of expertise between them. So ask away.

Or if you prefer, hop over to the Pub and Brewery, ask our friend the Bartender for a glass of your favourite tipple (yes, he serves an excellent pot of tea, not just the hard stuff) and speak your piece on any topic that you please.

This place is a bit of a madhouse.

It occurs to me that someone ought to write a brief introduction to a few of the more prominent and colourful characters here, but rather than do it in this thread, I'll start a fresh one over in the Brewery.

Hey - it just occured to me - you said a Mac clone! Now that's different.

There was a time when it looked as though the Mac clones and the PowerPC chip were going to take the market by storm. We were really looking forward to selling them. Hey - PCs get boring, and anything that wasn't the same old Intel-Microsoft recipe just had to be an attractive proposition.

But then Apple got cold feet (commercial suicide, in my view) and the whole proto-revolution came to nothing. What a shame.
