Does https provide enough security to do things like banking from a park bench using a public access point?

I'm hesitant to say yes, with one immediate concern that wireless can be potentially less secure because anyone listening can possibly gather your encrypted SSL packets. What they do with those captured packets is another story, but I think you would be relatively safe to use a public access point for this.

If you feel secure using SSL on a network whose packets may potentially be sniffed, then you're fine -- wired or not.
