Every now and then, I run into a perplexing problem with Win2K and WinXP systems that seems to possibly be rooted in Javascript or in Internet Explorer. The problem affects not only Internet Explorer, but the Windows Explorer (file manager), and even Norton / Symantec Anti-Virus.
  • Internet Explorer: Some of the quirks that show up in the Internet Explorer problem are: Clicking on certain types of link produce no result, as in no new window popping up or transitioning to the new page; basically, you click on the link and nothing happens. Also, Find (Cntl-F) does not work, as in the Find window does not open up for dialogue. I many cases, Windows Update no longer works. Firefox (if installed) is not affected.

  • Windows Explorer: Some of the same problems as mentioned above with Internet Explorer, notably, Find (Cntl-F) does not work.

  • Symantec Anti-Virus: Live Update quits working. "LU1803: Live Update failed while getting your update. Live Update had an internal error" ...blah blah blah.

So, has anybody here run into a magic bullet fixing these sorts of problems? Is it a Java / Javascript problem? Windows Virtual Machine problem? Symantec Anti-Virus doing something weird? Registry glitch? Sunspot activity? Something else???
