Is installing the VIA 4-in-1 drivers necessary?

Hello everyone,

I just did a fresh install of WinXP in a friend's computer. It is an Abit motherboard which is about 2 years old. WinXP is running fine but then a work colleague said I have to install the VIA 4-in-1 drivers.
I usually follow the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" What are your recommendations? Install the VIA 4-in-1 drivers or not?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Cheers,
Edward

I dont' install them anymore, but the again I don't have a good explanation for that except "it works" without them quite nicely.

Does someone have any more info on this?

XP has some version slipstreamed (IIRC 4.38?), so maybe there is still need for an update for the 8xAGP, which all new boards have. I don't know if Windows Update could install the VIA 4.40 AGP driver (or what's it called).

If You are installing 4-in-1s, I'd suggest You head to some forum (like Sudhian or AMDMB forums) and do little searching. Some older motherboards did not function well (if at all) with some versions of 4-in-1s, IIRC.

I can't remember if I have some other version installed at the moment. If I have, it's 4.40...

Cheers,

Jan

They only work well with the newest mobos (if they work at all) anyway...
