Any performance degradation recorded from the previous month? Has the avatar directory size impacted our performance at all? What about some of the recent threads that are plastered with pictures?

I am omnipresent
So since March, total hit/day has roughly tripled, but our bandwidth use has actually gone down since then? Or am I reading something the wrong way?

Here are some of our bandwidth usages so far. For whatever reason the host is missing January. These measurements are all in MB.

Feb 2002 storageforum.net 200.956312
Feb 2002 Total 200.956312

Mar 2002 beta.storageforum.net 46.707021
Mar 2002 storageforum.net 2171.308474
Mar 2002 Total 2238.967794

Apr 2002 storageforum.net 1363.029072

May 2002 storageforum.net 1397.051371

Jun 2002 beta.storageforum.net 42.280904
Jun 2002 storageforum.net 1532.133254
Jun 2002 Total 1586.600731

Jul 2002 beta.storageforum.net 0.177932
Jul 2002 storageforum.net 763.778209
Jul 2002 Total 763.994652

I'm a little puzzled by July... I can't believe in 1 day we've consumed 763MB of bandwidth! I'll have to look into this one... I'm thinking the 763MB for July should be part of June since we had a busy month.

I don't see any performance degradation from last month, however I think the site was busier due to a few events.

Here is a recap of the avatar directory:

April = Avatar directory size: 28.71 KB

May = Avatar directory size: 67.95 KB

June = Avatar directory size: 123.32 KB

(avatar directory was not enabled before april)

The growth is almost doubling in size per month, but some of this could be from me uploading new libraries of files. phpBB offers a limitation on the avatar directory to keep people from overflowing the site.

If anything, I would think the avatar directory improves performance because the site doesn't have to make as many requests outside of SF to obtain avatar images. This may be incorrect, but I think for overall appearance, it helps the page to load faster. We have also implemented 100 posts per page during the last month. We were at 50 posts per page, and doubling it may have introduced a slight delay for some folks.

I don't think some of the recent threads with images hurts the site performance much. Most of the images posted are from outside servers. There are some exceptions for folks who ask to place a few images on SF.

Hmmm .... looks to me that the mystery isn't so much the July stats as the March ones. How reliable are burst.net when it comes to these numbers? If you take out March, then the numbers look entirely believable, a slow, steady growth.

Doug, when did you make the change for gzip?

I can't remember anything in particular that happened in March.
Could we be seeing growth of the front page?
