Linux & NTFS

Does anybody have any suggestions for an app that will allow CentOS to read and write NTFS partitions/drives?
I searched for an app but just got frustrated and confused. (possibly because I don't know what I am doing )

It's a kernel module. If you need it, just recompile your kernel.

What version of CentOS are you using? I run Fedora at home, which is somewhat similar to CentOS and the NTFS kernel module is available in a default install.

I double checked and the latest kernel from CentOS 5.4 (if you have version 5.x you can upgrade to 5.4 via yum) includes NTFS support.

If you're running the GUI and have automount enabled (default) it should work automatically, assuming the fs is not dirty.

Certainly sounds like you should be using the stock CentOS 5.4 kernels for the best possible support.

I don't think I would attempt this. After recompiling would I be able to use yum to update to newer versions of the kernel?

That is an interesting question to which I do not have an answer. My stuff is all close to stock nowadays.

Yes you can use yum to update, but your customised kernel will be replaced with a stock one as part of the upgrade. (But you can always redo the recompile of your kernel).

Sounds like a pain. This is why loadable kernel modules were invented.
