Recent news articles point to a new release, and recent benchmarks report it boots in half the time as most other Linux distributions, and is more small screen friendly. (15secs on a netbook, vs 30sec for Ubuntu on the same netbook).
I've been using GNOME3 for about a week, and am feeling so-so about it. (Some of the bugs are annoying - and some of the missing features make it doubly so).
