A lot of malware is distributed by completely mainstream Advertising Services like Doubleclick. For some infections, it would be best to do a re-install of the OS. It is easier to do a file copy rather than a reinstall, even with a backup.

Recently it pulled a corrupt file, AVAST found it, quarantined it, and then it was deleted on restart by diskscan.
