I've been trying to modify XP Pro to allow more than 10 connections. I've tried a few things I've found on the net, but nothing works.
Anyboby here know of a way to increase the number of connections that actually work?

Thanks,

Upgrade to Linux or install a Windows Server product?

AFAIK, XP Pro is hard-limited to 10 connections. There probably is some Registry Ninja-ing you can do, but my guess is that if you manage to get it to take more connections, you're probably also changing a bunch of things that make XP a desktop OS vs. the server version.

Seriously, if its that important, why not just stick it on some other kind of computer?

Somewhere in time.
AFAIK, that's been hardcoded like Merc said in the workstation version of NT, 2k and XP since the NT days.

I think he meant cost of a Windows server OS for 4 servers. There are obviously a lot of client PCs.

That kind of crap is exactly how Linux gets in the door of an all-Windows shop.

There is great debate on moving to Linux because of these problems. Of the 5 operating system people in this department, only one is familiar enough with Linux to set it up properly. The rest of us just poke around with it.
I have alieviated some of the problems by limiting inactive connections to 15 minutes. Seems some would connect to the files and never disconnect for days at a time.
Also thinking of doing a fresh install of XP without SP2. Apparently the 10 user nonsense was installed with SP2. But, this has other issues to consider.

[none of the hacks I found on the net worked]

Well don't you only need one person to set it up? A Linux distro with Samba installed doesn't exactly need a lot of maintainance. I've never had a system doing just that crash or have performance problems (Well one time but I knocket the NIC out whilst it was running so it get's a pass for that).

Samba would also do the job noticably faster than XP pro (Or even Server 2003 AFAIK).

It would be kind of interesting to see what kind of speed you'd get out of a linux server running in VMWare on the current windows box... Stupid solutions are not often the best... But sometimes they are...

If the 1 person is on vacation or gets hit by a bus, we're screwed.
But the virtual Linux looks promising.

I have a few Linux systems out in the world that I installed in '97 or '98 that are still running and doing the things they are supposed to do.
I love it when I get a call like

"The power went out and that one computer's screen just says 'login:' now."
"Can you still access your e-mail and all your files?"
"Uh... yes."
"OK. Don't worry about it."

Ask the other five if they are interested in broadening their skill base and have the Linux guy teach them. It's called a redundancy plan. Seriously, I'm not being smarmy, I find that some people (given the chance) will jump at the chance to upskill. Others find a niche and are happy in it. If even one of your Windows only people sticks their hand up, then the "move the box to Linux" problem is solved. Then your entire org has options...

I find most people are willing to learn. Especially if their boss tells them to do it.

At my office we currently run Oracle and MS SQL, but are moving all of our apps to Oracle. So, we have Oracle and SQL DBAs working side-by-side. The managers have been telling all the SQL people to learn Oracle. It seems to be a pretty clear sign that if the SQL people don't learn SQL there won't be a position for them in a couple years.
