i have to think he's lying. He's old enough that he's probably used gas stoves and heaters before (obviously since he has a gas oven). When you light the gas you can easily see how flammable it is.

Same thing in a lighter... same thing with a BBQ.... pretty hard to imagine that someone who uses a gas stove wouldn't make the connection between the extreme flammability and explosions in enclosed spaces....

I realize that people in a depressed state might not be thinking rationally, but by putting other people in danger and lying about it (or even not lying about it) he should be put somewhere we he can't hurt others. I personally wouldn't mind if he was wiped off the face of the planet, but maybe he's a decent guy at heart and just needs some counseling.

And Howell, Purdue's UNIX systems all had these marvelous tutorial programs accessible through the "learn" command. The were written in 90 and 91, so they were probably around when you were there. I recall the one for vi as being about 2 hours long, and covering advanced details like regular expressions, for someone patient enough to sit through the whole thing. :)

Arrrgh, and I would have learned it too if I had only known it was there. When I transfered away I stepped down to programming on a teletype. And there were only three terminals.

IM is to email as Nextel two-way is to the cell phone.

I know that zephyr started sometime in the late 80s, as the first recorded revision of its man page is in 1990.
