I am looking for a new motherboard to replace the ASUS POS that I have.
It would appear that Gigabyte and Supermicro are the favorites of the forum.
I already have a P4 3.0GHz CPU (Prescott), so what would you recommend? I prefer Intel chipsets.

Thanks,
Bozo :mrgrn:

What's wrong with an Intel board?

I mean, other than the fact that they have kinda crummy BIOS options.

In my opinion, nothing. Everytime I've setup an Intel desktop system for the past ten years, it's always been with an Intel motherboard. For starters, I like that many of them are passively cooled.

I know I've mentioned this before, but it is nice to reiterate, that I still have one or two SE440BX-2 boards successfully running in the field.

The problem that I've found with Intel boards is that, not only are they incompatible with the cheaper and better chips from AMD, but they often include the most craptastic built-in graphics, ever.

Start here, and see how much money you want to spend.

I like Supermicro... Smaller company then Intel, and they test their stuff.

Still, Intel chipsets like the 440 BX are really nice...

Ive bought nothing but Intel boards for the last 10 years. Was looking to expand my horizons. Besides, it looks like I could save some $$$ with a Gigabyte.

Gigabyte. Every time. Or failing that, Biostar. Not often that Merc and i agree 100% these days, but I'll take 5 to one Merc will vote for Gigabyte too.

Intel boards are generally quite solid, but under-specced and over-priced. Besides, you only have three CPUs to pick from: P4 (grossly over-rated and under-performing for all but a handful of specialist tasks); Celeron (there is no possible valid reason to buy one of these, ever), and Pentium M (an excellent little performer that can match it with the old Athlon XP on equal terms, but priced like it was made of solid gold).

Lately I've used Tyan, Gigabyte and Intel and I liked them all just fine. Usually Intel on Intel gives me a nice warm fuzzy, but as I've said in a couple other threads, Gigabyte has been so good to me in the past that I actually feel guilty for my customers when I *don't* use their boards.
