New SF favicon

I made a new favicon for SF. On the original one (the one in the address bar as I type this) I applied a dropshadow and the resulting geometric distortion makes me cringe every time I look at it.

So whoever's updates the website, please drop this favicon in the root directory and we can all enjoy a clean, geometrically accurate graphic in the address bar.

p.s. The original had a touch of blue in it. This one's straight greys. If you hate it I'll change it back.

Thanks Piyono. You may have even crated the original one for me back ni the day. I uploaded the new one, but you might have to clear your browser's cache.

Heh. The original one never worked/never showed up in FF for me but the new one does. Thanks.

The old favicon would show up for me in the url box and on the tabs, but would not show in the Bookmarks/Bookmarks Toolbar Folder ... but the new one works in all three areas !

I did like the touch of blue in the old one...would it be difficult to add that splash back to the new and improved favicon?

Not difficult at all. I am happy to keep revising as long as Handy is kind enough to put 'em up. I'll redo it tomorrow sometime.

Funny...

Looking at the new icon in the address bar in Firefox it appears squashed at the bottom, but if I follow the link I provided above, also in FireFox, the icon is displayed in its proper proportions, in the browser window as well as in the address bar. IE displays it correctly always. FF bug?

Yet Again.

Now the current icon makes me cringe. Favicons used to always appear against a white background so you'd make the transparent bits white. Now, thanks to FF3 they're on a gradient. To compensate I used an index transparency to make white the corners disappear.

This one's a PNG because most browsers support 'em now.

Get it here

Enjoy.

I replaced it with your new one, but I still see the white corners. Should I not be converting it to ico and just leave it as png?

You're getting old, Dave. The memory's going. :mrgrn:

ICO format definitely supports transparency. However, I wasn't sure about PNG, so I looked it up. Turns out, it ain't supported in IE6 (now there's a surprise ). But I also still get the white corners in FF303 (not in Opera - it sensibly still has a white background).

I tested the new icon I made in FF3 and IE7. Works quite well.
However, the icon I see now is not the one I made. Did you edit the file and add white and black to the transparency color index?

You may have been seeing white corners still because FF3 is not so good at fetching a new favicon for a site it already has cached. You can force it to update the favicon by navigating to it directly. Just type the direct path to the icon in the address bar and hit enter. Should work (and post the path in this thread so that we can see it, too!).
