Toshiba To Show Off Blue-Laser Drive

Both Toshiba and NEC together proposed a format for a 15GB single layer, single sided read disk, a 30GB dual layer single sided read only disk, and a 20GB single layer single sided rewriteable disk.

Although the mention of large capacity optical drives is not new, knowing that the media and devices are presently operational is nice. However, I would prefer to see a single optical disc store 300GB or more of data.

As a note: One of the elements used on the media is Bismuth. Bismuth Subsalicylate is the active ingredient in Bepto-Bismol.

The Sony Blu-Ray recordable with 23GB of capacity is looking like a contender as well. They are also implementing the same in their HD Camcorder range etc. Tho it does use a cartridge, although for double sided media I would find that a bonus.
