Got this board for free from Merc. about a year back (thanks Merc!):

Has been working great until today. Sound works fine when playing back MP3s but there's no sound when playing any type of video clip (ie.e WMP, Quicktime, any video). There also seems to be a lot of background static output from the speakers/soundcard.

Got the latest drivers installed for all hardware. Using WinXP Pro SP2 + all updates.

Installed this codec pack with no luck:
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/acemega_codec.html

When I try to play video though the control panel that comes with the codec pack is says something like 'audio hardware not available'. In Device Manager it looks like the AC'97 Realtek device is working properly and there are no problems shown.

I'm thinking of getting a cheapo soundcard to see of that fixes it. Ideas otherwise?

Check what your default playback device is in the Sound and Audio Devices section of the control panel.

That was it StereoDude. That's a setting I have not had to look at for a long time and never thought of. Thanks a ton!

That's weird how MP3s were fine but videos were not. Any idea why?

Your MP3 player must have it's own settings for which sound device it uses. I know Foobar2k and Winamp do.

Thanks. It's actually my father-in-law's machine. He must have been playing with his settings not knowing what he was doing and messed it up.

Thanks again,
C
