I am omnipresent
I hadn't been by Tony's site in a while.
redhill.com.au is looking really good (as usual), but I thought it might be inspirational for the rest of us to read Tony's descriptions of the systems he sells, and in particular the justification for the way his systems are build, his price, and the components he uses.

However, since I actually use the Redhill guide as a teaching tool, I'm once again going to prod him to update it it; I am seeing some "page not found" problems I wish could be corrected.

Very nice indeed -- trim, no frills and consistent, the visual presentation matches the textual messages to a 'T'. In short, every element not only works together but enhances each other in supporting the message being conveyed (finely-designed and well-crafted systems oriented unerringly toward doing their job efficiently and effectively)-- always great to have a synergy going. A minor point is that I particularly love the Redhill case badge -- nice piece of graphic design. Overall, great work there!

By the way, creating a website that is cross-platform friendly and primarily uses CSS like Tony has, isn't that easy. I'm trying to get Opera to render something correctly right now that works just fine in IE6, Moz and Firefox.

Opera is a problem child. I confess that I don't really bother jumping through hoops anymore trying to make Opera work. I design with Moilla, jump through whatever stupid hoops I have to jump through to make Explorer 5 and 6 work, and stop there. I used to really like Opera, but they lost me when they went from V6 to V7. The Opera 6 user interface was nigh-on perfect, but 7.x is over-cluttered and confizing to the point where I don't bother to use it except to see if a website works in it or not. If it does, good. If it doesn't, tough luck.

Sorry Opera. Your UI was your big selling point. Now you've stuffed the UI up, I doubt the product will be around for too much longer.

Harware update? Might be a long way away. I just have too many other projects on the go. Main one at the momemt is www.bird.net.au Still early days, but we are getting there, little bit by little bit.

Merc, I wasn't aware of the page not found problems. (Mind elsewhere.) Where are they? And I really must do something with the May Special. Seems a pity to throw away that perfectly good set of pages though. Maybe we better have another special for October!

Bahngeist, my friend Louise did the artwork for the case badges more than 10 years ago now. We are still using the original set of badges we had made up all those years ago. Not many left now, I'll need to order another batch soon. (And yes, I'll keep them exactly the same.)

Buck, by the way, is much better at creating good, clean css than I am. If you look at my code, some of it is very sloppy and needs to be cleaned up. Another rainy day job.

sigh

Very nice job indeed. Is your bird site running some form of a wiki?

I'll agree about your Opera comments. I find that it is too much work to cater to the needs of Opera, therefore I don't. I focus mainly on IE6 and firebird along with W3C validation. As long as two browsers are happy, and a validation occurs, I say it's cooked and ready to serve.

Thanks for the compliment Tea, and your code isn't that bad. I was using your wy.css file as a reference the other day because I was to lazy to look it up in a book. :D

Woohoo, I found Opera's code of contention:

Code:
position: relative; float: left;

By removing the code the line of text still justifies left, but Opera no long justifies every single word left.

Annoyingly, PayPal generates some of my code and it fails horribly with W3C validation. I really don't feel like changing their code everytime I drop in a new item. At least the code renders well across different platforms. On the up side of things, both of my CSS files pass W3C validation. :)

Is there code similar each time you have to use it? I mean, can their code be rewritten using php?

I'm imagingin if you plug their string value in, and then have php parse out the correct format, you won't ever have to change it again, unless they change their code.

Handy, yes their code can be changed with a php routine of some sort, however, I'm not worried about it. The basic process is that I create an "Add to Cart" button through PayPal, and the code they generate has some minor flaws. This isn't a major error that will prevent the code from rendering, but it just won't pass the W3C validation.
