What do I need for a remote desktop connection from an XP box to a 2000 server box? Terminal services?

I use this here and there at work and it works better / faster than VNC which I am currently using.

It's been a while since I've used 2000 server, but I think I remember a bit.

I assume you are only having one user connect at a time? If so, you need to install terminal services in "remote administration" mode, that way you don't need a licencing server.

Don't know a thing about netmeeting, remote desktop works pretty simple though.

Under 2000 server the remote desktop connection logs into a seperate account from whomever is at the computer using it, even if it's the same user account. Is there a way to log into the current desktop session?

Does XP allow you to log into the current desktop session? I would think so as MS is touting this as a good "help fix it" tool for people at home.

I don't think it does, you'll need remote32 for that.

Change my earlier first statement to read:

What is remote32? Is that an extention to Microsoft remote desktop?

Little google on remote32 informs me it's basically a competitor to VNC.

Want to stick to Remote Desktop because it's so damn fast.

In general, the fast remote control apps cost money, i.e. you can have free or fast but not both.

Remote Desktop on a server acts like Citrix, because it is in fact the same thing. It is not possible to control the console like VNC et al. This means that you simply can't run certain software with RD, but there are ways around this.

That's what I wanted to hear ddrueding, will look into moving it over to XP now. Not really using any of the features of 2000 server except routhing but internet connection sharing in XP is enough for me.

I deally this machine needs to go into a closet or storage area suitable for computers somewhere. I want to have everything it does but not see the thing.

Remote desktop should also pipe sounds through the virtual logon under XP.

It was like that by default for me, must not work when the source machine is 2000.
