Anyone tried any of those adapters that will let me use SATA drives on a PATA controller?

I want to put a few larger drives on my 3ware 7506-8 to replace the 2 320GB drives I have now in RAID-1. 500GB IDE drives are still available, that isn't much extra space, and the 750GB IDE drives are crazy expensive. I looked into a basic PCI SATA RAID-1 card, but wasn't very thrilled with what a saw.

That leaves me with SATA to PATA adapters. Something like this or this.

Thoughts?

I have used something very similar for SCSI 80 pin to 68 pin. They worked fine. But make sure you put a piece of tape on the PC board on the side that faces the hard drive. I had one short out and it destroyed the hard drive.

I have only used the opposite kind of converter - SATA host to PATA drive. Data was corrupted after a while and folder names became illegible, so I ditched that idea and reformatted the drive.

Well, I threw in the towel on this idea. I ended up buying a new motherboard / cpu instead.

I got a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P and Intel E5200 CPU.

I will use the Gigabyte / Jmicron chip for RAID-1 of two SATA 1TB drives for the OS and I'll reuse the 3ware card and the 2TB RAID-5 array. Later when I want to upgrade my RAID-5 array I can use the 6 ports on the ICH10R controller for some SATA RAID-5 lovin'.
