Over the last 6 months I have bought 20 Seagate X15s for use in some small file servers. In the last two weeks I've had two fail. Both were in the same server, in the same slot (drive #1). This server is not on line yet and has less than 100 hours of running time on it.

Am I missing something? Two in the same server, the same drive???

Other parts: Adaptec 3200 controller and cable, Intel D845EBG2 MB, 1.8GHz Intel, 1GB Crucial ECC memory, Antec 300w ps.

Thanks,

Bozo :D

The common factor seems to be the slot. I would be more suspicious of it than the drives at this point. Possible problems:

- Bad/loose connector (for the drive or the slot itself)
- Bent pin
- Slot going bad (I assume it's a hot-swap bay)
- Slot position / insufficient cooling

Another big possibility is power. What all is that 300w PSU supporting? Is the unit on a UPS?

Of course, you may have just gotten 2 bad drives. Can you install them in different slots or a differnt machine to test?
