Smoothwall + Squidguard help...

I am now officially in over my head (again).

When I was putting together plans for a firewall, smoothwall looked really cool. It's easy interface and powerfull features are very nice. And it offers one of the features that I needed: web content filtering. It does this via a program called squidguard. Unfortunatly, squidguard isn't nearly as easy to set up as smoothwall. So now I'm in trouble; not only do I not have enough knowledge to follow these steps, I don't even have a linux machine to preform these steps on, or the knowledge to set up a linux box to learn how to preform these steps...

Help? Suggestions? Please?

Thanks, I knew you could help me, you're a champ ;)

hehehe... what step are you having trouble with?

from a quick look at the beginning it looks like you want to get the binaries over the source if possible. The binaries are comparable with a zipped .exe file... simply unzip and copy to the correct location.

this allows you to skip step 2, which is a step that could potentially be a headache if something went wrong.

Well, I just caught the part about being able to use sftp to transfer the files, so I'll give it a go tomorrow. I guess it was just step 2 that freaked me out. Thanks for the response...

Have you considered DansGuardian instead. It appears to have some SW peer support.

Looks awesome, but the guide never mentions what program he's using to extract the .rpm in windows. I did many a google and only found a broken link :(. I'm interested in this and want to move forward, but currently stuck.

help?

errg....I can't figure out the command for pscp.

Actually, I don't think I'm that stupid....I don't think the root login is letting me access for FTP transfers anyway.

..or is that more stupid?

What username do I have to use to connect for FTP transfers?

for FTP to your box or another box?

typicallcy for anonymous FTP (a public FTP) you would use an email address.. doesnt have to be real... anon@anon.com is my favorite.

if it's a private FTP you need to specify a valid user and password... typically the root user is not allowed to connect to a server whether FTP, WWW, SMB, etc. This is for security reasons.
