To my surprise, I happened to notice that Sivar has been designated as moderator on 4 of the 5 user forums. This has long been needed and, on the surface, is a positive development for the SR community. Lets just hope that saying about absolute power doesn't apply to Sivar

... and in other news, I'm not seeing technical disccusions I'd choose to take part in. SR hasn't even done any meaningful reviews in what? Two months?

True. But to their credit, how many different variants of the Maxtor drives or out now? WD and Maxtor are really making a mess of things with their "guess what platter density I am" practice.

It's not like there's a shortage of DM+ 9s in the world. Hell, SR hasn't reviewed a Samsung drive since the SpinPoint P40. I can remember thinking I was cool for having a 740X three days before SR released its reviews. I've had DM+ 9s (and 8s, too) for a couple months. SR published 15 reviews in 2002. 8 were for IDE drives. Of those 8, HALF were WD drives, and there was only one 5400rpm drive out of all of that. SR hasn't published an optical drive review in years.

WTF?

Money crunch or what, I see a trend here, and it's not a good one.

No argument from me on the disparity of the HDD review figures. But doesn't SR rely upon evaluation units to be provided from the drive manufacturers or graciously from retailors such as Hypermicro? Has it ever been their policy to go out and purchase drives they are going to review? - which is something they probably should be doing. Perhaps these channels have dried up? Targeting the DM+9s, perhaps it took them a long time to procure an actual 80GB platter model? I have no idea if the supply chains have actually had these available for long - from what I was reading over the weekend, it doesn't appear they have been up until recently.

As for optical drives, perhaps it is best the SR let that aspect be handled by others (CDRinfo, CDRLabs, etc...), and just stick to HDD. In fact, why not expand their HDD coverage to include laptop drives? Interest in such an area has been expressed on more then one occassion.

I'm not seeing technical disccusions I'd choose to take part in.
Agreed, aside from a recent post by assymetrical on flash memory, there hasn't been much in the way of technical discussion. On the other hand, not much has been going on here too. Unfortunate, cause despite that I wouldn't be contributing much of anything, I certainly do enjoy reading the debates that delve upon the more theoritical aspects. What do you have in mind - ideas or subject wise?

I should clarify that statement -> there is definitely more interesting discussions and less repitition here, and, as Mercutio highlighted in his post in the "Two forums" thread on SR, a much higher SNR as well. That said, my point was specific to techinical discussion. Perhaps it is indicative of the state of the computer/technology industry - sure there's always something new and going on, but how new and exciting have things been lately? I suspect that many of you would feel as I do that things have been fairly drab.

Cheers, CK

Yez, Mercutio. On the other hand, if we ignore the no-one-iz-interezted 5400 RPM linez, Zamsung have not releazed a new drive zince the P40. What do you want ZR to do, review an imaginary one?

(Not that there iz anything wrong with being imaginary, of courze.)

Tea, I'm going to give you a oranguatang spanking if you don't give Tannin his "s" key back

*I'm* interested in 5400rpm drives. I've got one of the 120GB Samsungs... er, around here somewhere, anyway. They are still being released. They are still getting better. Low noise, low heat, presumably higher reliability (unless they're U-series) and of course there's price v. capacity, which is the main reason I like them (160GB is a lot cheaper when it's 5400rpm).

Computing is kind of "blah" right now. New drives are out, fine (good, even!), but the warranty-thing dampened my enthusiasm for most new models. SATA is presently, well, stillborn. Hope that gets better. CPUs are boring, at least until AMD gets off its butt, and on the software front, I'm not seeing anything interesting for a long while.

Maybe we should get back to that wooden case thing... :)
