Transfer speed between two drives

Under WindowsXP, how long should the transfer of a 519MB file take:
- between two hard drives on two separate controllers
- between two locations on one hard drive
- between two hard drives on the same IDE channel
given a 7200RPM, 8MB cache drive of average performance.

I'm asking because it took about a minute to transfer said file between two partitions on my system drive (Maxtor DMP60, 40GB) and that strikes me as a long time.

If cut operation, immediately
If copy, slow... about 20% of the max speed of the drive

The speed of the slowest drive - negligable (couple percent) difference between same and seperate channels..

the file copy situation that you mention using is the slowest possible way to copy files. It could potentially be faster to copy to another hard drive and then back..
