I am having difficulty formatting a 1TB drive in a USB enclosure (tried two different brands). There is no problem when there is only one partition of 1TB, but 3 smaller partitions are absolutely necessary since this is a backup drive for other drives. There was no problem with 500GB USB drives. Have you any ideas, or is it just some weird compatibility issue with the specific drive? I hate to throw out the drive because it is only one day old, but some data was stored on it before trying to reformat. Therefore it cannot be returned because there is no time for a wipe in the next few hours. Thanks.

XP error checking does not complete - unable to check whatever. PM indicates some partition errors, however accepting the changes does not fix the problem. It is not possible to create a simple 238GB partition in the disk manager. Formatting fails with Unable to format, yet a 1TB format and subsequent checking is fine. I also tried two different notebooks with the same results. Weird.

Very weird. I have used a number of 1TB drives (Seagates) without formatting issues. But I have only ever created single full-size partitions. I don't have any with me to test, sorry.

The drive could very well be bad.

You might want to try pulling the drive out of the USB enclosure and formatting from an internal connector.

Yes, I know. :( No internal connector was available on the 3 notebooks.

How does Fry's treat returns for retail hard drives? It is possible to get a refund? What do they do with the drives? I don't see drives back on the shelves with the ridiculous slightly reduced price tags. However, I have returned defective goods to find them back in stock a few hours later. :(

I forgot to mention that I subsequently purchased a Buffalos 1TB Turbo USB drive and it is fine. The case is reasonably made and it even has a fan that snaps on. Crapware is on a CD, not preinstalled.
