Yup. That's right. USB 2.0 doesn't mean what we think it does.

Isn't that funny?

Apparently, a manufacturer can claim USB 2.0 compliance with a device that only handles data at the pathetic 12Mbps that "USB 1.1" offers.

More here.

I was reminded of this because of recent grousing about scanning.

AFAIK, there is no such thing as a "USB 2.0 connector" either. I believe So-called "USB 2.0" cables merely meet the specification; well-made existing cables may also work just fine.

You have to wonder if USB 2.0 really does have a future. How many peripherals can we point to even now that take full advantage of the higher speed?

In contrast, there seems to be a growing number of 1394 devices kicking around.

USB "2.0" seems to be on every new motherboard now. Whether that's Hi-Speed USB is a matter for consideration.

Firewire adoption still seems glacial in comparison to USB2 - a year ago USB2 was downright exotic. I'd wager most of the members here don't have it.

Where are you seeing new FW stuff, time? I've seen maybe one scanner recently, and everything else is the usual video cameras and disk enclosures.
