Thoughts?

Just finnished downloading it (links to DL and BT on /.)

Looks pretty good. Plays REALLY fast on my current machine.

Why did they ever leave the original Quake and Unreal Tournament behind?

I'm still PO'd that the full version of the original UT didn't use the same "Morpheus" level from the UT demo (specifically, the weapon/powerup mix is different).

It looks surprisingly good - and runs really well - on an XP1800M/Radeon 9100.

The vehicles are #$%# impossible to control. :(

When did the 12-year-old FPS-playing crowd turn into a bunch of racist little bastards?

All the player models in UT 2004 are, uh, black.

So I got online and played for a couple minutes as "Big Black Africa" (reference to a Spike Lee movie, "Bamboozled").

With all the specific taunts against my nick, I thought I was playing with the Hitler Youth.

I just downloaded it tonight and it seems good so far. The vehicles are a nice change. Time to give the game a whirl at the LAN party tomorrow.

So I take it I'm not the only person who has purchased this game (not that it's doing me any good right now...)?

It doesn't seem to run as well on midrange hardware as the demo did. I installed it on the same 1800/Radeon9100 that surprised me for working so well with the demo and... well, it was intolerable, even with the same detail settings.

I haven't bought it yet, but I was considering the purchase of UT2004 and battlefield vietnam. Circuit city had them for $30 each a few days ago...

I read that the release of UT2004 has higher quality textures...could be the reason why it won't run as well on your mid range hardware.

If I could get it with my EA discount, I might consider it... but I can't, and I'm still working on the original UT....

Anyone have a favorite map yet?

IMO the "Tokara Forest" DM map is awesome, gorgeous. Which probably means no one will ever play it because the background is so detailed.
I don't like the updated version of "Morpheus". It was my favorite map in the original UT, but in the new one, it's a lot harder to do tower-to-tower acrobatics. I liked being able to set the "air control" parameter in the original, too. Can't do that any more. I also miss the "relic" mutators from the original UT; I thought those added a lot of flavor to vs. bot play.

I wish there had been more/better Onslaught maps. The Snow map is fun, but the other than that one and good old Torlan, they left me kind of limp.
I'd love to see an air-combat-only map; they included the mechanism in the spaceship Assault map, but just thinking about the possibilities of floating platforms, tons of low-grav jumping and dogfighting makes me think Epic missed a boat somewhere.

Oh well. I think the game is a ton of fun.

I don't have a favorite map yet, but I like the Onslaught maps the best. ArcticStronghold seems to be a fast-paced map, and I also like Severance.

My favorite vehicle is the manta. I love being able to take out the Goliath Tanks because of its high maneuverability. I absolutely love to hear "Road kill!". I take out at least 60% of the opposing team’s troops by cutting their heads off. 8)

I'll be playing tonight if anyone is around. Send me a PM/e-mail or IM. I'll most likely hear the IM before any of the others, so let me know so we can find a public server. I'd host, but my connection can't take more then 2 people.

Well, considering I now have a T-1 at my disposal, and a dedicated UT2004 server running, let me make some firewall modifications and fire one up.

Stay posted here, or you can catch me as 'ddrueding' on MSNIM or AIM.

It's up. All Onslaught, map rotation. bots will be added to keep at least 4 to a team. This thing is really fast.

The server is running @ 216.228.25.250
Password is 'tweak'

I'll be posting this same message @ SR, so you may see some of the regulars from there as well.

Thanks for setting up a server. I'll check out the server tonight when I get home from work. I know we're 3 hours apart, so I'll wait a bit before sending you a IM.

Is your place rigged up so that we can play against your customers? Or so that your customers can play against us?

If I'm on IM, you can send me a message. I haven't quieted down my new rig, so it's turned off every night.

Yes, the server is supporting both my customers (not too many yet) and the SR/SF crowd.

I may be opening up some of the other servers as well (CS + AA, BF I can't as the bandwidth requirements would choke my T-1)

Goddammit I told you to give up on that! Sell the Raptors you have - people on ebay are stupid and will pay more than they're worth - and buy 7k250s.

BTW, I'm lousy at FPS games. But I'll show anyway.

Also, I see that Tribes 1 and 2 will be released as freeware on the 4th of May. That's kinda cool, too.

Or I would have if I could. Screw it. After watching

ut2004://216.228.25.250/index.ut2

for the last hour, I think I can come up with a better way to waste my time.

Just finished replaing the Smoothwall firewall.

Merc, The PXE server isn't for doing entire system loads...just for ghostcasting. The PXE implementation of the onboard Realtek 8169 positively blows chunks.

I only played for a few minutes. I forgot that I promised to clean the fish tank tonight. :( Now the tank is all clean, and I must go to sleep.

If someone will donate a good video card to me then I will play too. This Radeon 7000 just isn't going to cut it.
