I'm spec'ing out a new system, and it would be nice if my new video card would work in Vista with the full Aero crap if/when I installed it. I've heard Aero will require DX10. Is there any easy way to figure out which video cards will support DX10? I've also heard that Nvidia cards will be much better supported. From what I've seen dual-monitor setups are better supported on Nvidia cards in Linux, so it seems there's little reason to look seriously at ATi cards unless I find a real bargain. Any thoughts?

My loose understanding is that nothing out at the moment will support DX10?

Nope, nothing does right now that I'm aware of and I doubt they will fully support it for a while. I read recently (and posted in another thread) that MS will have to release an new DirectX 9L for WinXP so that games can support the newer features of DirectX 10 while hardware catches up to it. You'll be able to play DirectX 10 games in WinXP.

AFAIK, G80 supports DX10, is launched this week, but won't be available for a few weeks yet. This is the high end, so expect to pay a motza.

R600 (ATi) has been pushed back until Feb '07. Again, don't expect retail availability for a few weeks after, and (for both players) don't expect retail pricing to match list for at least a quarter after launch.

If you want DX10 support + sane pricing, you are looking at mid '07.

I am omnipresent
Full Aero does NOT need DX10. It needs a DX9 card with 128MB RAM. ATI and nVidia both have ONBOARD solutions that offer that level of support. Er, if you want to give up 128MB of main memory, anyway...
