Thinking about getting some drives in near future and I want FDB for quietness.

Looking at the WD2500's specifically and there are many types now.

WD2500BB
WD2500JB 8mb cache
WD2500PB 8mb cache FDB "quiet drive"
WD2500SB "RAID" edition. FDB, 8mb cache

Are the JB's FDB? I thought some of them were... These are going into a storage array but the SB drives are pricey now.

Further more are these drives FDB?:
WD800JB-00FMA0 <-- this has the new black top
WD800JB-00ETA0 <-- haven't seen it yet but it's on the way, brand new.

The all-black cases do not signify that the WD drive is FDB. I just had two in my hand, one all-black and the other silver-and-black, both are FDB. The center screw hole for the BB motor will be missing on the top plate of the FDB endowed drives. The new black top plate is probably some coating to reduce the amount of particulates contaminating the drive.

And here I thought they were just making black drives because they looked cooler!

Having an all black case with all black interior parts makes my computer run 5% faster at night :mrgrn:
black pcb on everything... black coated wires... black plugs...
black led... er... i'll have to rethink that one

Please stand quietly while I hunt you down for to beat you down with a nice beige case panel.

But You would look sooo much cooler if it was a black case panel with fan grills on some lights on it :mrgrn:

Honestly, if all computer parts were purple, I think that the world would be a better place.

Holy thread hijack batman!

Heh, now I am thinking about going with four Samsung Spinpoint SP1604N drives so I guess it doesn'y matter anyway. Everywhere I look people seem to like this drive for it's being quiet cool and reliable so I will probabbly give them a shot unless something changes my mind real soon.

Get the 8 MB cache version; SP1614N. It's only about $5 more.

Cheers,

I am omnipresent
And for the record, they are super-quiet and super fast. I can't speak to reliable yet, as I've only been buying them about five months, but the nine or ten I have haven't given me any trouble.

Super fast? Not in my experience. My 7k250 whips it up pretty good.

Fast enough? Definitely.
