Finally got another DVD player, and the scsi DVD player installed.

Now I'm running at 1600X1200 with DVD on one side, and the other stuff on the left hand side.
Seems 1024 and 1152 don't distort. But what's tru in aspect ration for
1600?

Thanks

720 x 480 for DVD. That works out to 3:2 so for your desktop it would be 1600 x 1067 which you don't have available!

Not exactly true. It assumes non square pixels that are .9x wide, so it's really 648 if you have square pixels.

Poor question.

What ratios don't distort for the entire screen, not DVD. DVD plays in a window.

Sorry.

800x600, 1024x768 and 1600x1200 are all perfect 4:3.

1280x1024 and 1152x864 are the weird ones that'll cause distortion or extra black bars.

1280 x 960 is the correct (4:3 or 12:9) aspect ratio - which is what I run.

Divide the larger dimension by 4.

Multiply result by 3. If the number is the same as your smaller dimension, then your sweet.

800/4 = 200
200 X 3 = 600

Widescreen DVD is 16:9.

Not always. Sometimes it's 2.35:1 (Phantom Menace, which looks particularly awful on a 4:3 TV and is still not that great on a smallish 16:9) or 1.78:1.

Of course, people who regularly complain about black bars and "not seeing the whole picture" simply deserve to have their ignorant selves introduced to the hot jumper cables of justice, but maybe that's just me.

I overheard a kid at blockbuster saying to his mother that widescreen sucked because you lose a lot of the picture...I didn't say a word.

I can't fault him though...I was more than likely just as dumb when I was his age. I do remember a time when I was little (pre teens) that I hated movies with black bars. Once I learned of the advantage, it was a whole new world.

Ya live and learn...

That all depends on your monitor, resolution, and DVD software. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x960, 1600x1200 are all 4:3 ratios. However, with a proper setup you should be able to view DVDs correctly with any resolution. Ideally you want configure your video card so the resolution's AR has the same AR as the monitor. However, 1280x1024 LCD monitors are the except to this rule.

We should be asking the studios for animorphic widescreen format.
Fortunately, almost all new DVDs are, but my local Blockbuster still has almost as many full-frame DVDs as widescreen.

I dunno what DVD software you are using but you should be able to find an option to "preserve aspect ratio". This will preserve the proper ratio as you click and resize the DVD window to your liking (i.e. it won't squash or elongate the people on screen :) )
