I hit the insert key to turn the bloody thing off after I find my clumsy fingers have accidentally hit it the first time.

I use it for cut & paste. I've never had a problem with accidentally hitting it.

Sometimes I pry it off my keyboards. On my Linux box, where I do most of my wordperfecting, I do need it for copy/paste-ish functions.

I have used it for cut and paste for as long as I can remember (before the Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V shortcuts.

I also use it for overtype modes on occasion (once or twice a day)
