Are there any drive diagnostic tools that run in Windows? I need to fully check some USB 2.0 drives. It appears that the Seagate tools wants to create a bootable disk or CD that only runs from some kind of DOS.

Thanks

You can run "chkdsk *: /r" from the command prompt in Windows (the * is the drive letter). This will check and repair all clusters, even empty ones.

Seagate has an Enterprise drive diagnostic program that runs inside of windows. But if my memory is correct it might only do SCSI drives.

Hitachi??

Yes, but I was hoping for some better diagnoticis like temperature, SMART, whatever else, etc. I guess it is not available for Windows (really silly). I'm still a little paranoid about the potential data loss, so triplicate storage will be continued.

I bought another Seagate 160GB since the first one seems to work well enough and the OEM drive has the full warranty. It is not as silent as the Samsung which exhibits no whine even outside of an enclosure, but similar to other Seagate 5400.2s and 5400.3s. Of course the drives will only be used ~100-150 hours per year. In a couple of years 160GB 2.5" drives will be too small and then discarded.
