So my uncle's wireless went in without a hitch.
But he had viruses and spyware and more problematic: a wininit.exe error on startup. He is running windows ME.

So I cleaned the viruses - thanks AVG.
But AVG wasn't updating. I had to uninstall and install the latest to get the updates. On the old version there was a pending update that needed to run after a reboot. But it wasn't running.

I thought I heard someone mention a file check utility like ssf or something like that. I don't remember the name. I want to check to make sure all the windows files are there without reinstalling. Is this are utility for this?

Yes I'm deciding how best to approach the matter of replace ME with XP to them. I might suggest 2K instead as they might not need any more ram. XP may slow down their PC though... at least every XP home install I've come across is slow.

Turning off the graphic crap amd unnecessary services makes a major difference in performance.
