WinXP Network Connection Slow to Initialize

My dad's system runs good smooth and quick. Only problem is that, when he boots up, his network is slow to initialize a connection. So, he has to wait about 30-45 seconds after he can see his WinXP Desktop before the network connection is active (little TVs appear in the taskbar) and he can access the internet.

System did not exhibit this behavior until I updated his key to a legal one and downloaded all the 60 or so updates available from MS via WindowsUpdate that he had been missing.

System is socket 754 VIA 880 board with a Sempron 2600+ & 512MB RAM. Network card is onboard Realtek.

Any ideas on how I can get the connection to initialize faster?

The connection in general or connection to shared drives?

I've found on VERY fast PCs that connections to shared drives (Windows Networking) can take 30 - 45 seconds to start after the PC is at a clean desktop, which I guess is the result of some optimization of the Windows XP boot process.

This is just the Ethernet network connection to the wired router that connects to his cable modem.

Before the WindowsUpdates were applied, the connection initialized quickly upon bootup and he was immediately able to access the internet. Immediately after the updates, it takes about 30 seconds for the network connection to initialize (i.e. make the network connection). After that, the system/internet access is fast and the network connection is fine.

Is there a command to rebuild the network config? Maybe he needs someting like that. or, maybe an uninstall/reinstall of the network card might restore some of this for him.

maybe something like this? I've never done this so use at your own risk.

I tried the 'Repair Network Connection' option via the GUI. I'll have to give those other options a try too. Thanks.

I lived with this problem for years on my Win2k m/c. My new XP Pro m/c doesn't have this problem (and I'm thankful for that!).

Just tried this on my own computer: netsh int ip reset c:resetlog.txt

No harm done it seems.
