Can you download and install the software to turn XP Pro into XP Media Center? Or rather do the same thing as XP Media center.

Not only that, why would you want to?

MCE has a decent 10' interface, yes, but it uses a proprietary recording format for video that AFAIK cannot be transferred to any actual useful format. Blah.

I've never recorded video with Windows. Does Media Player by default create WMV files?

I have a copy of XP Pro and was considering using it for a HTPC.

What software/hardware would you suggest to do this with? I have a ATI TV Wonder VE but have never been able to get it to work with Comcast cable. It works fine for turning VHS tapes into DVDs though.

You probably need a cable box + an IR blaster to handle tuning.

No, Buck, MCE uses some weirdo format that's based on MPEG with some DRM added on.
