Gig-E speeds for wired network behind old router

I have a D-Link DGS-1005D as switch, ZyXEL (Realtek chipset) and onboard NF3 NICs. I get ~25 MB/s, which is nice boost from the ~10 MB/s I got with the D-Link 10/100 switch/router/firewall/WLAN/whatever. This is just the basic no jumbo frame Gig-E connection. The given speed is with FTP, I...

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

Yes, my $0,02 on the 7025-based board as well. Why not go with the case that Mercutio recommended? The same case in Newegg is somewhat more expensive, but the price is nearly the same if shipping fees are included (provided everything else comes from newegg). The powersupply is 380 W Antec...

    Something Random

After a few tries it seems that if one answers four in a row correctly in the beginning one gets to start at level 40. After that it's three corrects to go up and one wrong to go down... So my best score is 41, but if I go down to 1 I can hardly manage to get it up to 20... :sqnt: Cheers, Jan

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

HyperTransport page on wikipedia. Basically it's what AMD uses instead of front side bus (FSB). Except that AMD has the memory controller on the CPU. So, HyperTransport connects the CPU to the chipset. On Intel systems the onboard devices and GFX cards access RAM via FSB, but on AMD systems the...

    UPS monitoring

So you have in apcupsd.conf (is there such a file in windows?) the following: UPSCABLE ether UPSTYPE snmp DEVICE <ip>:161:APC:<community> The comments on apcupsd.conf say that the community needs to be "private" - meaning read/write access. "public" - read only access is not enough apparently...

    UPS monitoring

Have you enabled & configured SNMP on the NIC? I think you need to setup the allowed IPs/subnet, check the community names and their access rights. Cheers, Jan

    Smoothwall Hardware

Why not get the Intel's mini-ITX board? That + $4 Realtek card would drop the price $100. Granted, it won't fit into that shiny VoomPC enclosure... Cheers, Jan

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

AMD or Intel, for the average user it's pretty much the same. Both have dual cores from $60, so it's not wise to try to save by buying a single core. Memory is currently cheap, so at least 2GiB, or as Mercutio pointed out, 4 GiBs using 2GB sticks is certainly an option, should there be the need...

    120mm case fans

Poor choice of words from me... I meant that the switch is on a separate lead, not in the power lead - that is "smart", as it reduces cable clutter. Or did you even mean this? :???: At least Globe has fans that have the thermistor on a lead, so that it can be positioned better. Cheers, Jan

    120mm case fans

Here's the test for Antec Tricool fans at SPCR. The low speed RPM is 1200. SPCR recommends Noctua, Scythe S-Flex or Nexus (see the conclusion of the review). Noctua is ok for a case fan, but if the grill (finger guard) is too restrictive it should perform rather poorly. Those fancy blades...

    Backup to NAS Too Slow

I think one could also use Unison File Synchronizer. It has a fastcheck option, which only uses file size and modify/create times. The Unison project was moved to non-development status earlier this year. The latest stable version has a DST "bug" on Windows platforms, which slows the file...

    20 250GB disk shootout

It's a shame that the Samsung drives reviewed are "old generation" models. Well, in the end the reviewer promises to "examine modern products from the surviving manufacturers"... After the P120 series came T133, then T166, S166, and the current new-generation drives are either S250 or F334...
