    Windows 11

I think we all know how popular random UI changes are for Windows users. I have a few customers that still use Office 2003 because they hate the ribbon THAT much.

    Windows 11

Apparently Windows 11 has leaked. I haven't heard about anything but cosmetic changes yet, but we'll all be complaining about it soon enough. Might as well make a thread. The biggest change I'm aware of is a move of the Start button to the center of the dock, which, one, who cares? And two...

    Seagate MACH 2

Two sets of drive heads sounds a lot like double the chance for a physical failure to me. I'll be interested to get the Backblaze report on these in a year or so.

    dSLR thread

I believe Nikon has announced that they're ending sales of SLR cameras as well. Canon has said 2021 will be the last year it offers new SLR cameras and it has also ended production of a number of EF lenses that have an RF equivalent. But hey, there's always Pentax.

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

All this month, I'm meeting and working with a couple to help with their production needs. I'm learning a lot about lighting for video and about camera movement and I can honestly say I felt lust for a $1200 light this morning.

    Something Random

I know two people who have purchased $1500 HP gaming rigs entirely to get RTX3070s. Unfortunately, the graphics card / new console / AMD CPU thing is about to get worse since apparently Taiwan is running out of water for drinking, let alone industrial applications. That's ugly. I have family...

The easiest way to handle the internal-external name for a single host is to use a CNAME, so you can have your normal A record for handruin.org and an alias for minio.handruin.org that points to minio.handruin.noip.com or whatever. There are some DNS providers that have scripting APIs for...

Why can't you create a proper internal domain? I set up what I'm calling my backup box over the weekend, but I didn't have another Infiniband HBA, so I'm filling the storage over GbE and it's going to take forever. I also don't have a chassis for it yet, so there's just stacks of drives and a...

SMR drives are perfectly fine for ungodly amounts of data that doesn't change very much. They take forever to read and write to, but that can be ameliorated in most respects with a SSD cache drive. The Seagate SMR drives do behave well in disk arrays, so I have dozens of them. Once they hit...

I bought three of them. They do indeed come up as whitebox drives on Seagate's warranty portal. Which in my case means that I'll wind up using all three of them in the storage system I need at work and I'll buy a different one for myself. I was surprised how fast these drives are. My...

zfs isn't that bad for drive upgrades. It's slow, sure, but it works well as long as your hardware is in good working order. I should probably put together a modest proof of concept system before I get carried away and do anything else.

That's an interesting project. Would part of your plan include replicating your data offsite? Or are you just looking at it for bitrot / data loss prevention?

That i5 does have crappy Intel graphics; I have a little 10" HDMI screen I normally use for RPi that would take care of my needs in that department. I tend to look at ECC RAM as more of a headache for a home system. RAM compatibility can be a huge hassle until the RAM is so obsolete that no one...

    Something Random

I've never had any luck with full time permanent corporate jobs. That's one of the reasons I've stayed in the role that I have.

I think I might be tempted to use a 35W i5, like a 8600T, along with a Gigabyte C246-WU4. That gives me 10 SATA ports and a pair of nVMe slots if I want them. Throw in a couple 32GB DDR4 modules, an Infinband or 10GbE HBA and a SAS controller. I think we're around the same price. Yours has the...
