Merc's Useful Tools of the day

One of my students brought this to my attention: https://github.com/ChrisTitusTech/winutil This is a powershell script you can run as easily as irm https://christitus.com/win | iex as administrator. The command brings up a long list of installable software, but also notably includes some...

There was a leak of Google Documentation over the weekend that seems to thoroughly describe how its Search functions work right now. It's an interesting read. The site is run by some kind of SEO goon, but the information is still valuable since Google is in the process of making its search...

Some years ago, when I moved from Comcast consumer service to Comcast Business service, I had to be put through Retentions. Her response was "Hm. Well, I've never seen this before but I have to read this to you." At least she got a laugh out of it. Most communities around mine have some kind...

    Need a Decent Phone

At this point, I have a phone set aside for photography functions. It has a 1TB card and I use it with a USB-C to HDMI capture device so that I can display my viewfinder to a model and/or shoot video and photos at the same time and so I can swap it back and forth with my camera to get pictures...

    Windows Update Down

The problem with that particular bug is that Windows doesn't quite come equipped with tools to fix it. It should; we can in theory re-size partitions in Disk Management, but doing so depends on how OEMs decided to create partition layouts and resizing partitions is a big hairy problem, as is the...

For me, the justification for microSD is the ability to switch the personality of the device. I had a card full of media, mostly music, that I kept on hand for entertainment and I'd keep an empty one in my phone when I was traveling to swap back and forth with my camera so that I could sync data...

Love lives are something we all have to figure out on our own but I will say that I put part-time job hours into dating apps for years and that me vastly more harm than good, and I'm different enough from other people who live where I do that going to a bar wasn't going to work either. I usually try the offline updater before I take that step, because I most assuredly have it on a flash drive if not running on something-or-other on whatever LAN I happen to be using. It's been months since I've had to nuke a SoftwareDistribution folder. This might be a case where there are...

DIY Perks also did a really cool video using a Baguette pan for building high CRI string LEDs to make a light panel bright enough to make an artificial sunlit window. I'd worry about the long term lifespan of that many 40mm fans though. All any 40mm fan has done for me is suck and die.

You have to choose between the quality of the screen and your desire for an SD slot. Samsung devices have superlative screens even on their crappy phones. Sony does not have that, especially in terms of overall screen brightness. Not that you'll be able to tell, because no mainstream brick and...

My partner convinced one of the people she works for that she needed a pair of 32" Ultrasharp displays. She legitimately does do graphics work, print layouts etc. Does that need a 4k display? Kinda doubtful, but we got 'em. The TV is where PC games get played.

That's 50% better than the 1dx mk3! Canon definitely has different priorities from Sony and Nikon but with the R3 as sport-centric as it is, I was thinking the R1 would be a more well-rounded device. It may still be. Worst case scenario is that Canon makes a camera you won't buy. C'est la vie.
