    Simple NAS

Is there some kind of relatively small, low-idle-power NAS that I can use at 2.5GHz to shuttle data? It would be separate from that other network so that I can connect just two computers and leave the NAS on all the time with minimal power and heat, unlike the large NAS. I would probably just...

I have no idea what that version of Windows entails, but it's probably not available to mere mortals like me. There is no Your Phones program that I'm aware of on any on my computers and in fact no microphone in the system for security reasons. The laptop have them, but I stay off.

Basically Windows 11 is required and they will fix it later. Fortunately I did not fall for the AMD BS and buy the 9950X. It's not clear if there is some other bug in the CPUs or just when there are multiple CCDs.

    BIOS Updates on Ryzen

I discovered that there were BIOS updates for all my Ryzen mainboards. They already included the CV fix for the low level microcode to prevent potential hackers. As far as I can determine there is no performance impact and all my testing was done after they were applied.

Storage is not all that cheap in 2024. I was just looking at what it costs to store 132TB actual, i.e., $6000 for a modest NAS with 8x24TB in RAID Z2. It can be cheaper if you can homebrew with some gigantic, heavy setup using a greater number of smaller oddball drives, but 8-bays is reasonably...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

I doubt it. The "consumer" R bodies don't use LP-E6x, they use the LP-E17. The LP-E6P is all that Canon will be making in the future, but the cost is the same as the NH. I expect that all future Canon bodies that use LP-E6x will be looking for P batteries. However, somebody will probably...

So they are all dropping now. The 9700x numbers are obviously mostly or all at stock 65W. The 9950X (n=15) are less than 10% better than the 7950X in single-thread and about 6% in overall CPU Marks.

I have no idea why your CPU usage is so low, unless it's running old software that doesn't implement SMT very well. Many users will find that the single-threaded performance is what makes a computer feel fast, combined with a lack of crapware.

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

If the R6 III is like the R5 II you will need all new batteries. The generiacs trigger an 80 error and then shut down. The LP-E6NH registers as low when it is at 50% (blinking red). For some reason the cartouche only allowed me to buy two P batteries. I will run a profile on the P, but my...

Pretty much all of them have a mediocre to crappy BMS. I have not-so-cheap USB-C Canon and S*ny batteries with the idea of being able to charge an extra S*ny battery in a small boat from a power bank. After substantial testing of the Canon, I decided that the higher impedance and less accurate...

There are batteries now also. I have to do some testing on the body, but the control differences are going to be a hassle if you don't have a similar, newer body. In case you are not on the Adode plans, DPP was updated. DXO and others will probably take a while.

SSDs - State of the Product?

But you need to look at the TCO. A drive just sitting there on the table vs. being part of a system in some kind of storage pool. So it is worth paying more for larger drives to a point. No normal person would end up with such a Mickey mouse plan for 40TB of internal SSDs. :)

You keep talking about cheap SSDs, but I really need a link or some info on where one can actually buy them in 2024 or early 2025. So they are about $1500-2200, depending on supplier.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Well, it's all hard drives rather than SSDs. If I had enough SSD capacity then I'd need fewer NAS, or ideally newer NAS. NAS that uses U.2 drives are expensive. Off the top of my head, I'd get the TS-h1290FX. The NAS is about $7k, but 12x15.36TB SSDs is too expensive.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Manufacturers generally rate different HDD and SSD capacities with the same MTBF, but with SSDs the TBW is usually proportional to the capacity. I would not touch used hard drives with a 10 foot pole, but in a NAS or some kind of array they might be acceptable if you are buying from a good...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I understand that there is a huge gulf between the enthusiast and enterprise markets and the large providers don't want you to hold mass data locally. I suppose we will see some overpriced QLC 16TB M.2 eventually, but U.2/U.3 SSDs still seems better than a bunch of M.2 SSDs.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Yes, but that Highpoint thingie is the opposite of simplicity. A single large U.3 PCIe 5.0 SSD would be simpler and probably more reliable. How do you manage SSD failures with everything on one drive? I suppose the system is down and you have some kind of failover at the whole computer level...

Three would probably be about the average new vehicle assuming ~$15K for 122TB. SSDs prices seem to have stabilized and I expect will be lower in 2025. I don't think the 7000 X3Ds prices are dropping much more since they are a special purpose part that has not been replaced and the regular 9000s are not much better than the regular 7000s.
