    Gilbo, is plain good sense even allowed in this thread? You could get in trouble for writing that stuff.

    World's Worst Software

    Ever since I discovered Foxit, I haven't gone near Acrobloat. This present machine is lots faster than my old one. You may believe it's because of the dual core CPU and extra RAM if you wish, but I know it's all because it's never been sullied by the dreaded Acrobloat.

    Thanks guys, I'll give Avira a go.

    AVG8 = Crap!!!

    Liam, what's Avira like from the point of view of system performance? I don't care if it's slow to scan, just so long as it doesn't make the system slow down when you are not doing a scan.

    Gahhh. Pull the other paw. I've heard better special pleading in drink-drive cases. You mean once you spend a couple of years learning what ought to be intuitive and not too far off instant, it becomes tolerable after you essentially re-write the thing by writing your own actions to make up for...

    Let's see in we can follow the logic here. You have a problem with a lens that you have never used and never owned insofar as it is said by some random website not to be very good at doing something that no person in their right mind would want to do anyway? OK so far? Good. Only good stopped...

    AVG8 = Crap!!!

    Steady on there Dave. What about some of the other contenders, such as Easy CD Cremator, Windows Vista, Trend Micro AV 2007, Sonic CD/DVD, Kodak Easy-share, and the list goes on. If you are going to make a top ten of the very, very worst, you are going to have a tough time keeping it dpown to...

    I just checked with him. Appparently, "surprisibglt" is indeed the correct spelling. Tannin says that any fool should know that there only one right way to spell "surprisibglt", and it always has one "g" and two "i"s. Personally, I think he is making it all up to cover his mistake. My mother...

    AVG8 = Crap!!!

    I am more than happy to consider recommending a switch. Not impressed at all by AVG 8 - it's bloated and ugly. Anyone care to recommend an alternative product? Requirements: * No BS - I don't have time to mess about with individual email registrations one per customer or anything of that...

    Something Random

    Bloody evolutionists. It's a slander, that's what it is. Trying to pretend that humans are descended from me! Any fool kno that humans are descended from miscegnation between rats and slugs. (The slugs are where their bald patches come from.) I mean, it stands to reason, doesn't it. If humans...

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

    Actually, I'm not entirely convinced that low capacity drives would be a problem, Lunar. Obviously, you'd have to use more of them to build a same-size house, but that would be OK. The tricky part will be the roof. The main thing is to be sure to format them first and wipe all the data off so...

    That would be all very well, Merc, if Tannin could find his desk! It was last seen somewhere in his back office, buried under a vast pile of paperwork. Unfortunately, he forgot to take a GPS reading of the exact location and drilling has, so far, been unsuccessful. I'm hopeful that it might turn...

    iPhone: what's the catch???

    Sorry Dave, there might be a trans-Pacific language problem getting in the road here. I don't understand what you mean by "one cell provider". No, no ... wait ... I think I figured it out. It means that they only provide it to people who have one brain cell, is that right?

    Except that 1000D buyers are most likely going to be the same people who buy a kit lens with the body and never take it off. A fairly high proportion of them anyway. But some, of course, will take it further. Looks like a good little camera to me, largely free of gotchas - unlike the Nikon...

    XP SP3: What's The Word?

    No problems at this end. The "AMD problem" turns out to be a classic bit of FUD and Blame the Victim. Nothing to do with AMD, everything to do with shonky practices by a couple of vomit box makers. What happened was the VB makers - Dell and HP/Compaq from memory, but I'm too lazy to check so it...

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

    Thanks, team, this is getting me thinking usefully. On the DD option, I could always take the current R52 up to 2Gb from the 1.5GB in it now. Wouldn't cost much, but wouldn't achieve a great deal either, I suspect. Samsung only have one 160GB IDE drive, so whatever it spins at is whatever it...

    Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

    Please excuse long post. It might be better if I give as much detail as possible here to save confusion later. It's almost the end of the financial year and a sensible time, financially speaking, for me to upgrade my Thinkpad. The question is, how much better (if any) would the new system be...

    I started with Fushigi's code: CD /HOME/X9 FOR %F IN (*.JPG) DO MOVE /HOME/RAW/%~nF.RAW /HOME/RAW/X9/ CD ../X8 (and etc) The key line is: FOR %F IN (*.JPG) DO MOVE /HOME/RAW/%~nF.RAW /HOME/RAW/X9/ Turns out that, for no good reason at all, you have to write: FOR %%Z in (*.jpg) DO MOVE...

    So since when did DDrueding ever spend less than two to five times more than the reasonable amount any normal, sensible person would spend to achieve a given result? Are you feeling OK Dave? Didn't pick up anything nasty on your travels? I'd see a doctor if I were you. A head doctor.

    1: the cheapest Canon bodies are optimised for resolution, not high-ISO noise. A 20D/30D or 40D is noticably cleaner at ISO 1600. 2: the shot is quite badly under-exposed. Correct exposure for this scene would not be -1, it needs to be getting close to +1. Always expose for the main subject...
