    Hamachi

It's ages since I used this service. The scenario is that I can no longer establish a VPN tunnel to a (very) remote client - I suspect the router that lives behind the DSL modem is on its last legs (8 or 9 years old). Trying to configure a replacement over the phone hasn't gone well, so I sent...

    Yoga Tablet

It's probably just me, but this simple piece of engineering might change the game. Lenovo Yoga Tablet. For the first time, I'm considering buying one. I think they're right, giving you something to hold the weighty device with is almost as useful as the built-in stand(s).

    LED flashlights

In the end, the lights came back into stock on Zebralight's own online shop, so I ordered both the high CRI AA that Stereodude suggested and the much more powerful neutral-white 18650 alternative. Hopefully the electrician will be happy with one or the other.

Amazon US ships ONLY to the US for all but a very limited range of items (books). Amazon UK is a lot more flexible, but doesn't carry anywhere near the wide range of products available in the US. So there's only 2 Zebralights; both are obsolete and not what we're looking for anyway. :( I looked...

Thanks for that, Paugie. Just sampled some of Hummingbird, and I do like what he manages to extract from a piano.

    Music

Neither, I think. Apart from Imagine Dragons (which is seriously good pop), the others would be classed more as "alternative" - which may just be a euphemism for "has meaningful lyrics". ;) If you want real pop, Katie Perry, Mylie Cyrus et al are more than happy to give it to you.

    LED flashlights

Thanks for the ZebraLight recommendation. The weight is excellent. Would have to carry spare batteries, but 4x AA should add up to 110 lumens for >7.5 hours. But how do you buy them? Every single headlamp on their site is either backordered, out of stock or can only be preordered. :( Now that...

    LED flashlights

I need a headlamp for close-up work, i.e. arm's length. Needs to be well-secured but comfortable, have decent battery life (hours, not minutes) and good color rendition. Cost is no object, provided I'm not paying for diamond encrusting or the techno equivalent. Recommendations please?

    State of Internet connectivity

The thing is, it's not really $50/month, it's actually more like $80-85 because you have to pay for a phone land-line before you can get the DSL add-on. You can get so-called "Naked" DSL that doesn't require a phone number, but guess what? It costs the same as having a phone connection anyway...

    1. Graphite is recommended for locks, but the stuff will mark your carpet and generally get everywhere it isn't supposed to be. If you really need to add it, I'd advise buying a new lock or hinges instead. 2. Lithium grease is probably ideal for hinges, but I have no idea how you're supposed to...

I want to buy a new car

Er, no. Apart from the Northern Territory (speed limit 130km/h, used to be unlimited), we're universally limited to a ridiculous 100km/h, or an insulting 110km/h for Really Good Freeways (2 in this state). And 10mph = 16km/h = already into second level of points loss on license. The amazingly...

Mark "Chopper" Read died. Basically from Hepatitis C contracted while in prison, possibly from a blood-stained razor. They made a film about him, called "Chopper". He was a serious psychopath, claiming to have been involved in 19 murders. No-one seems to have disputed this, probably because the...

    SSD RAIDs Revisited

No idea what absence of Trim has to do with drives dropping off your array etc. It's not that long ago that most SSDs couldn't take advantage of Trim anyway. Yes, it can reduce fragmentation, but so can the drive's own housekeeping as long as you leave it plenty of free space.

    Crap selection of laptops

Coug has already corrected this to: Celeron < Pentium < i3 < i5 < i7. Bullshit. Most people aren't running Folding@Home and I don't know of *any* everyday applications that can max out a 4-core CPU - most can only fully use a single core anyway. And 2MB cache might cost you 10% performance if...

I've owned 5 washing machines. All but the first were front loaders and 3 were second-hand. Hitachi - their stuff was indestructible in the old days. Sold due to growing family. I want to buy a new car

Please don't misquote me. Rural accidents are more likely to be single-vehicle and the leading cause is typically fatigue and/or alcohol (which induces the former). Collisions with trees and rollovers are vastly more likely to be fatal than rear-ending someone in the city (most common accident...

I can relate to the better-than-expected performance which that review attributed to the gearbox. In my case it's a Focus with only 170hp, but really fast pickup. Normally sedate, but push the pedal and things happen very quickly. I suspect it's the same with Ddrueding's A3 - power-to-weight is...

    Crap selection of laptops

Not sure about this. DVI plugs still use pins - albeit more robust than a VGA plug - but still something that a ham-fisted user can bend if provoked enough. Whereas HDMI and DP are all "ribbon" style connectors - reminiscent of the legendary Centronics printer plugs. Personally, I think these...

Why persist with bullshit? Those engines were almost exclusively used in M3 models, hardly "a large part of their volume"! And the Koenigsegg used twin superchargers, the antithesis of "naturally aspirated". In any case, I agree with Stereodude: "Who cares about internal displacement of the...

I want to buy a new car

Is that a fact? I can only find two naturally aspirated BMW engines in the past decade that come close to achieving 100hp/l: the S54 3.2L inline 6 at 7900 rpm and the S65 4L V8 at a stratospheric 8300 rpm! Are you getting confused with BMW motorcycles?
  43. T

I want to buy a new car

Nothing wrong with >50kW per liter in any naturally aspirated engine, and especially one with such a large per-cylinder volume. The fuel economy doesn't seem unreasonable either, for a 3860 lb car packing that kind of firepower, not to mention the power-to-weight ratio.

I want to buy a new car

Congratulations Mubs, that seems like a really nice car. I'm guessing that the low-boost turbo is to cope with the low fuel octane rating and consequent lower engine compression ratios that are predominant in India? If so, an elegant and apparently very fuel-efficient solution.

I need to do a favour for someone. They have managed to store critical records on a USB flash drive, which is now reported as corrupt - their theory is that it's because they didn't 'stop' the drive before unplugging it. I haven't attempted this in many years. Based on experience, what...
