Any way to repair Windows 7?

I have a system that crashes with BSOD while loading drivers(?), even in Safe Mode. Is there any way to get around M$ bastardry that stops you booting from a CD and 'upgrading' to effect a repair? SFC /scannow says there is a pending repair or some such drivel.

Great advice all around, thanks. Coug, you're right, I could get a Powercolor 7950 for about AU$300 (plus tax). But I'm under the impression it uses way more power than a 7870? Can anyone make a business case for the 660 Ti?

    Logitech SetPoint on Windows 8

Thing #2 was the problem. There were 250MB of Windows updates pending. FFS, this is supposed to be a stable new release? They've had 18 months to sort it, but it looks more like M$ is making up the API as they go along.

    Graphics cards $200-$300

I can see AMD 7850, Nvidia GTX660, AMD 7870 and NVidia GTX660 Ti. Here are my observations so far: GTX660 costs more than 7850 but doesn't add much performance. 7870 adds noticeable speed for only $30-40 over 7850. GTX660 Ti can be much faster than 7870 in certain games, but generally isn't...

    Logitech SetPoint on Windows 8

Logitech T650 touchpad was a bit flaky under Windows XP, so set up a new boot drive with Windows 8 Home. The most basic touchpad operations (moving the cursor) work natively with Win XP, Win 7 or Win8, but without SetPoint, it's something of a boat anchor. Unfortunately, the latest 64-bit (or...

Power consumption for the home: or how those LED's do really work...

    Replacing a 750 lumen / 60W incandescent bulb with a 200 lumen / 4W LED reduces light output by nearly 4 times, but saves 56W of power. 1203 - 562 = 641 kWh energy saved. 641 / (6 hrs per day x 30 days) = 3.56kW power saved. 3.56 kW / 56 W = 64 bulbs. Greg has a very big house or a penchant...

I like that sentiment. :) Not true for me though, in that I turned the corner as 2012 progressed. I've blanked out the first few months, but highlights included rebuilding our main bathroom (we've gone on to repair severe termite damage in another 3 rooms, but it now looks like every room in...

    GPU Power to crack passwords

This is stupid. If hackers can gain enough privileges to actually access password hashes, why would they bother cracking user passwords? Mubs, rather than the length of your password, your bank account security relies on limiting the number of times an agent can attempt to log in.

    Computer Speakers 2012

Inspired by Mercutio's recommendation, I looked at the Genius range, but settled on the SW-HF5.1 5050 instead of the obviously higher-fidelity SW-G2.1 1250 that he suggested. Yes, I know I said 2.1, but: * The subwoofer driver is 6.5" instead of 5.25", with a suitably humongous 20L wooden box to...

It's an amazing scam! The energy stored by lifting a 9kg weight 1 meter is 88 Joules. Even assuming 100% efficiency (more likely <50% with the necessary gears), that's only 88 Watt-seconds (1/40,000th of a kilowatt-hour). Spread out over 30 minutes, you'd have a massive 50mW (0.05W) available...

As far as I can tell, there is no way to replace the protective glass separately without compromising the phone in some way. Corning claims Gorilla Glass 2 is as tough as the original while being 20% thinner, but anecdotally the GS3 is far more fragile than the GS2. I wouldn't consider one without a bumper or some sort of case. The bad news is that OLED panels (and state-of-the-art LCD apparently) need to have the...

    Corsair SSD simultaneous failure

Just for the record, the 60GB Corsair Force *has* failed. It disappears when you you try to access data on it, requiring a complete power off/on cycle before you can see it again. Sounds awfully like the same type of problem as the last Corsair Force that failed on me. I am unimpressed.

Never mind, I'm getting senile. Been under a lot of stress lately and making some pretty stupid mistakes. The SSDs appear to be fine: don't know what's wrong with the 60GB PC yet but the 120GB turned out to be the Intel Cougar Point fault - nearly two years down the track! Intel steadfastly...

question All-in-One PC or Other Options

This LG IPS231B-BN monitor would be an ideal match for the piggy-back solutions: it has a proper height adjustable stand and built-in speakers. I very much doubt that any of the All-In-One products, let alone an affordable 17" laptop, use an IPS panel.

question All-in-One PC or Other Options

A piddling laptop display is not very friendly to most elderly people. I calculate that a 17" 16:9 screen will add about 1/16" height to the existing 15.6" 16:10. Rather than an all-in-one, have you considered a book-sized PC that mounts on the back of any monitor with 100mm VESA mounting...
