A Generac 14KW system runs about $3,500. Install would be about $1,000 on the high side (local contractor) if you want the system that automatically switches over to the generator when your power goes out. It's not rocket science to install one of these but I would probably have a Pro do it. For...

I need more drive space. What brand/drive is good these days?

Yes..that's why I was recommending the 5400RPM Samsung. My point in mentioning the WD drive was only because that's the only 5400 drive I did a comparison to, although I think one or two of my Sammy's in my WHS are 5400. But that's just my opinion, of course. Nothing really to back it up...

I need more drive space. What brand/drive is good these days?

I replaced my 7200 Samsungs with a 5400 RPM WD EARS and I can't feel the difference. On a file server I am betting the difference would be less noticeable. Maybe check the transfer rate specs on the drives and see if it comes through in the numbers...

I need more drive space. What brand/drive is good these days?

Newegg has 2TB Samsungs. The choices aren't great nowadays and I can't claim to be up on the news but I hear the least bashing of Samsung, anyway.

I will have to give that a try after your review! :-) I must say I am amazed at this old WHS v1 installation now that I'm using it more. I downloaded a 2GB torrent (MKV file) of the first episode of Walking Dead and dumped it on my WHS. Added the Serviio DLNA server running as a service and...

Hmmm. Actually I could use the 2TB WD as a boot drive in my main machine and have 4x 1TB Samsungs in my FreeNas. What kind of good RAID mojo could I achieve with that? BTW: THE WD Drive is a WD20EARS NOT EADS. Is compatibility any better with that one?

I'm not powertrain expert but I'd say your premise is correct, overall. Of course, it's alot more complicated than that. I think you kind of get stuck in a somewhat circular mass loop though. Mass begets mass. Larger cylinders weigh more & have more inertia. More interia means they can't...

Revodrives? What would work with my setup?

Same boat. I would have to find a incredibly sweet deal to blow that kind of cash on that small amount of storage! At today's prices...no way. It's just not worth it unless you have a specific workload that would greatly benefit from the I/O capability.

Revodrives? What would work with my setup?

Based on his feedback elsewhere, I guess he either likes to waste $ or just doesn't want the cabling associated with a separate drive. I would consider one just for the novelty of having something in one of the small PCI-e slots for a change as well as the reduced cable clutter.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I think the problem is that most people are not doing anything disk intensive enough to make the increase in speed from a single SSD to a RAID setup very noticeable. Santilli has reached the point of diminishing returns with his computer workload. It's hard to notice differences of a 1/10 of...
