    Folding@Home

It took me 3.5 years to hit a million points. In the 5 weeks since then I'm already 10% of the way to my next million. These C2Qs and the GPU Folding do wonders for point generation. If all goes well I'll have my second C2Q up this weekend. TigerDirect has the OEM Q6600 for $290 (in stock)...

    Folding@Home

What I've been doing is, besides the PCs my wife & I use, running the client on the old 'clunker' PCs I come by. These are hand-me-downs or other old boxes. Like a P3-600 & a Duron 850. To eliminate their power draw, though, I'll replace several of them with another quad-core shortly. Once...

    I love this car commercial

The parking itself is likely to be real. I've seen that sort of 'stunt parking' before. That said, for safety and cost reasons they probably filmed the parked cars & the Audi separately & then overlayed them for the final. If you want a movie effect try this scene from Shaolin Soccer.

    More Vista nonsense

I agree with DD. Vista is here. I need to know it for when my employer and our clients start talking about using it. My employer has no immediate plans for it but that only means it's not being deployed today. Tomorrow is another day. And we have no control over what our clients implement...

    What really slows Windows down

There are reasons to disallow USB/external/removable drives. A lot of malware enters corporate networks through these devices. Someone gets an infection on their home PC, connects their thumb drive to it, and then brings in the drive to transfer data to their work machine. In a school...

YOUR FAVORITE VERSION OF MSFT OFFICE?

I'm using Office Enterprise 2007. Cost was $19.95, about $22 shipped, through the Home Use Program. If your employer does Software Assurance you might qualify. Regular Office @ retail is just too expensive considering my usage pattern. If I didn't have access to Office so cheap I'd probably...

Address book solution with external backup?

I assume this means that starting with 2007 contacts are stored in the PST file along with everything else. Building on what Bozo said, write something that will back up the PST/PAB file on a scheduled basis. I'd suggest SyncToy; it can be scheduled and is pretty easy to set up.

    VoIP woes: Troubleshooting?

*Sigh* Possible new VOIP woe: SunRocket looks to be dying. I'll wait it out as I like the service & the price, but if they do shut down, I'll need to transfer my home line to another provider. Skype doesn't appear to have a gadget that would allow me to connect my DVR & home phone for outbound...

    New HDTV Purchase

Exactly. I'd add that its thanks to the people who buy tech when it is still expensive that the companies can eventually bring the price down. Which is exactly what's been happening in the HDTV arena where prices for any given screen size have been falling 20-30% per year while the tech inside...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

How does CAFE limit choices? In the 70's people had a wide range of sedans that got what, 7MPG? In the 90s people had a wide range of sedans that got 22-25MPG. It seems reasonable that in 2020 we'll still have a wide range of sedans but they'll offer 35+MPG. CAFE is an average. There will...

Luckily the current WU doesn't appear to have corrupted. It picked up where it left off at some 63% done and is up to 89% now. Uninstall-then-reinstall in the same directory seems to have worked despite the CoreStatus errors. But a note about that requirement on the Stanford page would have...

And in case anyone else runs in to this, on my workstation I had to uninstall the old client before installing the new. Otherwise I was stuck with "CoreStatus = 63 (99)" messages and the client would terminate. I didn't notice until I had to reboot to finish applying some Vista updates.

    iPhone Stuff

I haven't heard of any functionality it has over my existing smartphone and in several ways its a step back so I can't see any reason to buy one. Not to mention it requires AT&T as the service provider and Satan will have frost bitten nipples before I'd willingly do business with them.

Aveo carries a Chevy badge but is a renamed Daewoo from Korea. Anyway, Handy's point about the mileage is a good one. I average 24.5-25MPG in my 8.5 year old V6 midsize sedan. New midsize V6 sedans get maybe 2-3 MPG more. So in 8 years, two complete automotive generations, fuel efficiency...

    Cellular Internet Service

I'll grant there are smaller & lighter phones, but I've never found the form factor to be an issue. I slip the phone in my front pants pocket; it's never been a bother. And with BT you don't have to hold it to your head when on a call. Of course, the Treo still looks better than that average...

    CD Copying for Vista

Any recommended apps? While I can drag data files to a CD via Explorer or burn music to a CD with WMP, I'd like a straight-up disc copier. For instance, I've an audio CD that also has some data tracks (music videos). Neither of the above ways seems to work for that. OSS v. buy doesn't...

What notebooks have decent screens now?

How about a notebook with a 20" widescreen? BTW, I take exception to "shallow". Shallow refers to depth. A shallow screen is thin. It has nothing to do with width or height. Widescreen, Thinscreen, Tallscreen, and Shortscreen more accurately describe the difference in screen shape. One...

As my recent Gigabyte experience showed. In my long history they have a 50% failure rate .. one board was DOA but the replacement has yet to fail. That said my bad board was a simple defect in the assembly process and it isn't enough to keep me from buying them in the future.

    IntelliMouse Optical: Need Another

With the VX I haven't noticed any real lag. The MX700 had horrible lag and the MX1000 has some, but the VX Rev seems pretty good about it. Maybe it's because it is a 2.4GHz device instead of IR or RF. I'll have to check out the keyboard; I've been wanting something with backlit keys...

    Vista on Laptops

Initial loads may be slower; I haven't really clocked them. Re-loading, though, when it can pull the contents from cache, Vista flies. Full Outlook 2007 loads sub-second as does Firefox. Even with Areo Glass amped all the way up. I'm speaking of my new desktop and not a notebook, though...

ICH8R or Gigabyte RAID? Which to use?

The Gigabyte did it in the BIOS. So the machine was unusable for 3 or 4 hours while it rebuilt. That's a minor annoyance at best as far as I'm concerned when it comes to a workstation. For a server it's intolerable.

Best Ingredient for Single Topping Pizza

We usually go to Maciano's, but then it's walking distance. Good pizza, decently cute waitresses. Their double-dough is a good compromize between thin crust & deep dish. Good Calzones. The local Giordanos is OK. I've never been too much of a fan of Connies. Home Run Inn is fine, but I...
