    Best movie you've seen

Heroes has definitely been a fun thrill ride so far. One of the very few recent series I'd consider buying on DVD. Grindhouse looks interesting and would normally even be the kind of movie my wife likes (she likes horror/thrillers more than I do) but she doesn't care for Tarentino. We're...

WaMu has been rather easy to deal with so far. 30 year fixed @ 5.75 just wrapping year 4. Went through a broker who was very easy to work with; I'd recommend her to anyone in Chicagoland.

Samsung Samples 50nm 16Samsung inches closer to making SSDs more mainstream

They should be. I'm going to guess drive interface overhead may raise the seek time to as high as 0.1ms or thereabouts. Which begs the question .. would such a drive include or benefit from onboard cache?

Are All Powered USB Hubs Burning Hot?

I've got this D-Link hooked up to an AC supply and I don't recall it even getting warm. I'll double-check when I get home. I typically drive a mouse, WD Passport hard drive, Treo sync/charge, and Blue Tooth headset charge off of it.

Samsung Samples 50nm 16Samsung inches closer to making SSDs more mainstream

Samsung going for a 64GB SSD in 2Q07. Now that's a viable notebook replacement drive. Adequate capacity and more than adequate STR. Too bad it doesn't mention seek times.

Will Ford make it past this year?

A friend was a 3rd shift supervising mechanical engineer at one of those steel plants in NW Indiana. He'd watch union guys clock in, go to the cafeteria, and sleep all night so they'd be fresh for their second (day) job elsewhere. Because of the union contract, they couldn't be fired even...

    Private Message Unread Flag Reset

When I went to SF this morning I noticed all of my stored private messages were marked as unread. Not a big deal; I just marked them all as read again but I thought it was odd since they had managed to stay read during my hiatus.

    UPS FOR A LAPTOP?

I picked up one of http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=173 for my inlaw's laptop. Nice as the phone & network version has phone & Ethernet protection as well as power. It's small and it comes with a velcro strap to attach it to the laptop's power brick. And it costs under $20.

Small Rant / Warning about Eset NOD32

Just had a vendor-paid lunch at http://www.capitalgrille.com/Locations/Lombard/Main.asp?Location=Lombard . $222 for six people before tip and that was without alcohol. While I'd love a glass of wine I'm still too full.

    Old cable modems = slow?

Yes, they can lack precision. For instance, if your first test happened to be when 35 other people click 'speed test' the results may well vary from the second time, when only 3 others (possibly) were taking the test. So you're dependent on server load and bandwidth as well as your own...

The card was under $50 after rebate; under $60 before so the price delta over a 4GB card isn't much. It's Patriot brand and has decent reviews. Frankly, I hate carrying extra cards, batteries, and chargers. While I have no choice on the battery & charger front I can eliminate extra cards by...

    WinXP 64-bit SP2 Released (+64bit Win2K3 Srvr)

I think all of the current discussion on 64-bitness is hilarious as well. My midrange servers have been 64-bit since 1995. Our current production box isn't very big; just 2 POWER5 CPUs. But it's got 32GB RAM to handle some nasty Java workloads.

Well I adjusted it to Superfine mode and it's down to a mere 2575 pics on the 8GB card. :) DPReview and others note 200-250 shots/battery charge. More, obviously, if I use the fiew finder and turn off the LCD and/or disable the flash. I'll likely pick up one or two extra batteries. I've...

    Confirm dead NIC?

The only other troubleshooting tip I can think of is to physically unplug power to the PC for a minute or two to clear/discharge the caps and potentially anything that may have goofed it up. Wait for the LED on the mobo to go out and then wait at least a few more seconds before reconnecting power.

    Wireless Router & cards

I've been using Netgear stuff for a few years now. The 634U was not a good product; had lockup issues, possibly from overheating. The 624 seems to be pretty good. I'm currently on the WNR854T (pre-N w/Gigabit) and it's been great. My wife uses a Netgear SuperG PCI card in her desktop and it...

The Aeron chairs are very comfortable but you do need to adjust them first. Earlier ones without the "Y" lumbar support broke easily; the Y ones seem to be a lot better. They're finicky but very nice once set up properly. That said, IMO they're too expensive for the home office. When we...

e_dawg, is there any reason you'd pick those over the SD900? Taking a quick look the only standout feature is improved zoom which doesn't matter too much for my purposes. A710: Too thick; not really a pocket camera. SD700: Not the current generation of processor but will read up on it anyway...

GM Pulls Ads From L.A. Times

My point is simply that there are commercial CVTs mated to engines with a decent amount of torque. And that powertrain could be put to use hauling a reasonably heavy load. I would assume Nissan stress-tested the setup before approving it for production. While CVTs may not be the be-all...
