Thanks, I'll give it a try. BTW, the Access is only about $13 so it counts as low end in my book.

Your favorite browser is now v1.5

Any security personal will say that obscurity is often worse than useless. And copyright is not the issue; there's nothing about serving the content to authorized users (be they public or subscribers/members) that changes based on whether or not the content is delivered in the context of the...

Your favorite browser is now v1.5

Sounds more like a tool for maximizing content extraction. If the content is not protected by requiring a user account, then it is available for public consumption. How the public consumes it doesn't matter. Security by obscurity is no security at all.

    Rechargeable wireless optical mice

The MX1000's battery life is measured in weeks while the 700 is measured in days. It also has the 3-segment graph for battery strength. The 1000 is noticeably lighter & has the tilting side-scroll wheel. The only bad thing about the 1000 to me is the thumb groove on the left is a little...

    Laptop bags

Wearing a backpack in a subway might get you shot by the police. Especially in London. I don't have a strong opinion about laptop bags as, like I mentioned, while I use them every day I just don't go far enough for it to matter. Comfort isn't an issue; neither is weight distribution. Room...

    Computer job in Chicago area

    1. Lake Forest is too far to drive daily. 2. I'm pretty sure they couldn't match, let alone exceed, my comp package. They won't pay a relocation fee, which means they would probably shy away from paying a recruiter fee, which means they're cheap. 3. I don't have a degree. I wonder if my 18...

    Laptop bags

I telecommute part-time so it is not uncommon for me to need to bring a lot of paperwork with me. I also work from a different office on occasion. Around here this sort of thing is common as my employer supports 'alternative' work arrangements. That flexibility is a good thing and having to...

    Laptop bags

I use the backpack that was given as a freebie in my CISSP training class. No special laptop compartment, but then I don't really need padding as I don't drop it or, in general, bump it in to anything. Most of my travel is from my den to the car and from the car to my desk (about 90 feet, 1...

    Antivirus software

I've been using the free AVG for sometime without any problems. On the pay front, I use CounterSpy for anti-spyware. $30 for a year subscription for 2 PCs. Symantec is a virus. Try uninstalling it and then scanning the registry for the dozens of configuration turds it leaves behind.

    Time for an Upgrade

I was thinking CP/M, but since it wasn't listed as an option I went with XP. Reasons: If this is an upgrade, you can re-use the OS license at no cost (just the activation pain). You already know it. You already have & know the apps. No data format migrations. If you want to be adventurous...

Yes, I thought so as well. While the malware is bad, and many of the reactions to it have been mediocre at best (why doesn't Congress address this vs. athlete's taking steroids?), the largest problem is that the security vendors we trust to protect us from this malware didn't treat it as...

    Why Windows Causes Stupidity

I'll second the motion for a reinstall. I just reinstalled the same OS, 2000 Pro, since my HD failed (see Tech Supp thread). Despite going from a 15K drive to a 7200 RPM drive, the rebuilt system is current running faster than the old machine. Now, I don't have everything re-installed, but...

    Atlas 10K II just died?

Mine was being stubborn even at 128GB. Didn't matter if I was installing XP w/SP2 or 2000 SP3. The basic format & install would be fine but when it came time to reboot it'd fail with no messages - just a continual reboot cycle. Didn't matter if I used the mobo IDE or a Promise card I had...

    Atlas 10K II just died?

Yes, thankfully. Unfortuantely, my attempts to copy the old partition to the new have failed, so I'm reinstalling Windows 2000. I've got backups of my data to restore from and will use that to supplement re-installing the apps. A definite pain in the butt, but it's been years since this box...

    Atlas 10K II just died?

Picked up a Hitachi 7K250 for $115 - $45 in rebates = $70 from Fry's on the way home from work. Considering the Samsung was going to run about $104, the Hitachi is a pretty decent deal. The Seagate actually booted so I'm Ghosting to the new drive as I type this. Yeah, I've not taken the SATA...

    Atlas 10K II just died?

So this isn't my year for SCSI drives. My 18GB 15K Seagate (original X-15) boot drive is now failing. Failed, really, and the only thing I want to do is retrieve my data off of it. It comes up intermittently but so far hasn't stayed up long enough for a backup. Most boot attempts it shows up...

Or, go get a department store credit card. They're generally very easy to get. Don't count on a high credit line (expect $200-500) but do count on a high interest rate. Use the card a bit anyway, and let them make a few $ in interest on you. After 4-6 months, they will have made reports to...

    How to lie effectively

Could be; I haven't heard. One tip, though, is to not rest your elbow on the door frame if you have side airbags and are at a speed at which they might deploy. If you do rest your arm on the doorframe, you risk breaking your arm should the side airbag deploy. Note that most side airbags only...

    How to lie effectively

Perhaps WRT digicams CF is king, but SD is 'big' in the PDA world. The smaller formfactor is better for designers who are after every bit of volume they can squeeze out of a device. SD is fast and has decent capacity, although CF will probably always be the capacity leader since it simply has...

Oh look, a legislator from Indiana is doing something stupid

I'm also just a tad skeptical that 808 people are a statistically large enough sample size when representing a population of 270+ million. That's 0.0003% of the population. And yeah, who agrees to phone surveys any more? Folks who are concerned about privacy generally won't and most people...
